So il Donald writes that 10,000 new ICE agents, 5000 Border Patrol agents and 500 Aircraft/Drone pilots will be hired.
Based on what DHS says there will be some lag time. From the time an application is received there are several steps. First, for ICE position generally at least a Bachelors Degree is needed. A Border Patrol Agent requires at least a High School diploma.
Second, security clearances average around three months.
ICE training runs at least 5 weeks.
Border Patrol training is 19 weeks. FLETC (in Brunswick Georgia) is already running close to capacity and has been for decades.
Then there is a probationary period.
A few other facts. Currently ICE employs about 20,000 people total so what is being called for is a 50% increase. Right now ICE does not have the supervisory staff needed to take that on in any reasonable time line.
Hiring a person is just the very beginning; you then need to equip them, train them, place them with experienced agents, evaluate their performance.
Oh, and there was no check attached to the Executive Order.
