I am wanting to ask those among us who have PH.D's., have any of you sold your masters thesis and/or doctoral disertation on the open market. I am curious because in investigating a certain persons website I found this person to be doing so. Perhaps you guys should do the same.He is charging $300 per copy and $1000 for a signed copy.
Please tell me this ain't so.

I noticed that, too. Apparently, he happened to find some originals. In the old thread, I had wondered how many he made originally. His defender said something about them being copies of the original, but the website specifically says, "originals."
I'm not sure if Stanford is the same, but at my school and many others, anyone can request a thesis/dissertation and copy it for your own use. Copyright laws must be followed, however.
I have never heard of anyone selling their thesis. I don't quite know what to make of that.

Hi Sidelined.
I was under the impression that masters and doctoral theses were the property of the university where you studied, usually the university owns the copyright too.
I do not know how legal it is to sell your past higher degree theses, but I am pretty sure that you would need to ask the uni's permission.
Perhaps it may be different in other countries.
Brian.

If they were indeed, "originals", then he would have the legal right to sell them. Just as I have the legal right to sell any books I own. The copyright holder only has the right to restrict copying; not distribution of existing copies.

I am wondering just how valuable would a 1953 thesis and a 1957 dissertation be to anyone 50 years later. I mean are there collectors or what?

As I understand it, doctoral thesis from real universities are publically available and reprints are usually provided 'at cost' - about 10p a page (including plates, and time to copy); er, 300-500 pages, so 30-50 which is about $45-$75, at current exchange rates?

Never having even completed high school such things are beyond me but if you take a quick jaunt over to the website, Access denied
Perhaps you could explain why this particular thesis is of such great value on a strictly knowledge basis.

Oh, hang on - it's his masters thesis, and doctoral dissertation.
Very different matter from PhD thesis.
Why are they worth so much? They're not; he's a rip-off merchant.
