Those born after 1970 or so.
This is a spin off from the tasteless joke thread.
The period from 1960-about 1975 was one of the most amazing times to be young (teenage to 29) in America. I wonder what those of you who did NOT live through that period think it was like.
Can you tell us what you think life during the 60's was really like?
Feel free to ask specific questions if you like and hopefully those who did live it will answer.

You mean during the dark ages? Life was horrible.

Actually - in the UK for most people the 1960s was just like the 1950s.

Well, there was a war and new contraception, but probably most people worked crappy jobs and/or went to college; a few people blew their favorite social issues way out of proportion and/or drank/smoked to excess; but pretty much I imagine that people did exactly the same things they did today, only with less video games. I doubt they got laid any more than people used to, but I'm sure they talked about it more.
I'm glad that you think the 70's was so great to be young; I would have hated it. The 90's was the best time to be young; I'm sure that just about anybody who ever was young is convinced that they were young at exactly the best time.

Speak for yourself. Being young during the triple 0's is great.

Born in '74, here is my view of the decade.
While some think that every young adult was a free loving hippy, it was probably far from true. My guess is that the "Leave it to Beaver" types longingly looked at their free wheeling peers as youngsters now look at carnival workers. It was a separate but radical lifestyle, something their parents nor their parents parents could understand.
It was a time where society was being pushed to accept a new morality and junk the old norms. Sex was now something to be discussed about instead of giggled at. It seems, at least to me, that a generation created a society for itself. Even economically, it was the first time a teen/young adult market formed which may have also fueled the "change".
Interesting time in American and World history. Wish I was around back then. I still think the music of the 60's and 70's is better than most of the noise made today (with exceptions of course). The end of the Cold War pales in comparison to the Sexual Revolution.

What was in my post that made you think that?
I would have hated it.
Why?

Isn't that what you said? That between 1960-1975 was an amazing time to be young? Did I misunderstand you?
Why?
1) No video games except for the ones I would have had to program myself on a university timeshare mainframe;
2) Realistic possibility of being drafted;
3) No EvC!

i dunno, did you have to carve everything in stone tablets? homework must have been a real bitch.
i imagine it was much like today, only more hippies, and less harmful drugs and sex. although i do regret to have missed the local doors concert in 1967, when jimbo got arrested and detained through woodstock.
politics must have been rather similar, although i bet that the activism level was a bit higher in the youth "counter culture."

I was born in 1960 and thus grew up in the 70s. It was fun, but when I think back on how hard life was back then I do envy today's youth.
Things were so much tougher. If you wanted a hamburger from McDonald's or Wendy's, you had to park the damn car and go inside. If you wanted to watch a TV show, you had to do it while it was on the air. If you were driving along in your car and wanted to make a phone call, you had to find a pay phone. That worked. And then you had to stop and get out of the damn car to use it.
If you wanted to listen to your favorite song while driving, you had to dig up the tape, then fiddle with FF and RWD buttons to find the tune.
If you were lucky enough to have a computer, chances are it was a TRS-80. The "video display" consisted of a row of lights.
The best thing about that decade was the privacy we had for the lack of pagers and cell phones, while at the same time we enjoyed the freedom that had been brought by the sexual revolution. Sex was free and easy back then; I suppose I do miss that. It was a good time to be a teen.

Keep America Safe AND Free!

Sex was free and easy back then
Even I'm old enough to know better - sex is never free. And seldom easy.
I detect a fair bit of nostalgia-vision at work here.

Very funny!
Berberry,
You made me laugh out loud with your remarks. I especially liked this one:

No, it was. Every day I wish I had been born just ten to twenty years earlier so I would have spent more of my youth during that time, and not having most of my adult life spent with the AIDs crisis and puritanism (even among the liberals). Sex is the new witchhunt.
It is true there is a bit of nostalgia to believe that public sexual expression was open everywhere in the US at that time, but it was in many places, and actual sex was a lot easier and free-er.
Hell just 5 years ago was better for sex than it is now, much less 20 to 40 years.

Calling Dan Carroll...
Seeing that sex has been mentioned nine times now (ten, if you count this sentence), I wonder what's keeping Dan from 'shooting his load'.
