yeah, title's misleading. my problem is in chemistry. I need what's called a cationic exchange resin membrane, and I've the patent number for the process to make it.
I can't read the patent, because the US gov hasn't uploaded patents before '76ish into full text form--so I've no clue how to make it.
Anyone know how?
or
anyone know where I can buy some?

Cat swap
What we looking for here, Kuresu--a surfactant, deflocculant? Nothing in pre-`76 editions of Chemical formularies?

Re: Cat swap
I'm not really sure. perhaps I should explain the full problem.
I want to make sodium borohydride. I found out that if you have a container bisected by the (cationic exchange resin membrane). Then you have an anolytic compartment with sodium hydroxide. A catholytic compartment with sodium metaborate. You also have an electrode in each compartment. apply the electricity, and you end up with sodium borohdride and hydroxide in the catholytic compartment.
really simple to set up, if've you've got the membrane.
appreciate the help, though.

At patft » Page 1 of 1 they have every patent back to 1789, but only at the "images" button before '76. Go to http://www.uspto.gov/patft/help/images.htm to get a link to a TIFF reader so that you can see them first. I find AlternaTIFF works better for me - I use it every week. Even the new ones are much easier to read as images instead of plain text.
Oh - you just about have to have the patent number to find old 'uns.

Re: Cat swap
Woohoo! I'll bet a beer that this was Manhattan Project stuff, Top Secret until about 1953. All that early borohydride work was directed toward uranium borohydride, the "other candidate" that got beat out by uranium hexafluoride for making bomb-grade uranium. And that UF6 research gave us Teflon and a bunch of other once Top Secret stuff.

thanks for the alternaTIFF tip. now I can actually read the damn patent. Too tired to work through it now, but gave it a test run, and wow. magnification is awesome.
thanks.

Re: Cat swap
well you know, as we speak, or, type, the government's running a new top secret program. no, not the wiretapping. that's just a cover. This program--Bronx Box Project--is looking for new ways to make boxes out of this top secret material codenamed cardboard. All I know is, it's an acronym.
