I read some time ago that its possible the greeks mistook elephant skulls, with a big central cavity, for the skull of the cyclops. This was based on the idea of their being pygmy elephants (not mammoths as far as I recall) on the mnediterranean isles.

I read that as well. In addition, Estonians who found mammoth bones, and completely hashed the reconstruction of the animals thought that mammoths were giant burrowing creatures.
