Author | Topic: Would you do a Gene Scott? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I found an interesting fact out about Gene Scott
The interesting fact is that Gene Scott apparently has abandoned all his principles and has turned his back on God, finally realising that God isn’t all he is cracked up to be. Unfortunately, Scott has cancer, which I am genuinely sorry about, and he was quite adamant that his faith would heal it. But now, as the cancer has apparently spread, he has decided to rely on the more reliable method of secular medicine. The question I would like to ask is what would you do if you were in his position? Would the strong fundy types who post here give up on God, just as Gene Scott has, or would they keep their faith with the knowledge that God could cure them at any time? This question can apply to atheists, because I would also like to know if any atheists here would pray to God for healing if they had a terminal illness that the medical world could do no more for. I know this sounds contradictory, an atheist praying to God, but perhaps when faced with impending doom an atheist may take Gene Scott’s stance of abandoning your principles and jumping ship? So, theists and atheists, would you keep your own faith right to the end or would you do a Gene Scott? Brian.

While I consider Gene Scott to be a faithless, disgusting liar, bigot and a foulmouthed demigod, I don't see what he is doing as any abandonment of faith.
First, I don't believe Gene Scott ever had any faith. He was only out to accumulate power and wealth for Gene Scott. He, like Jim Bakker, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Robert Tilton and way too many more are simply con men, the 21st. Century equivalent of Billy Sunday. But deeper, I don't see what he is doing as abandoning faith. There is an old story about a man, caught in a flood. When the fire department came through his neighborhood warning the folk to evacuate, to seek higher ground, he refused saying,"God will take care of me". As the water rose he climbed to the top of his roof. The sheriff came by in a boat to take him to safety, but again he refused saying, "God will take care of me". The water contunued to rise and he climbed into a tall oak tree that overhung his roof. As he reach the very top of the oak a Coast Guard helicopter came by to lift him off and to safety, but for a third time he refused saying, "God will take care of me". Still the waters rose and he drowned. When he arrived at the Pearly Gates he asked, "God, why didn't you take care of me?" God said, "Damnit son, I sent the fire department, the sheriff and even the Coast Guard to get you. Why didn't you accept the help I sent?" If, as I have said here before, GOD has given man the four resources of intellect; scope, intent, extent and empathy; we are expected to use them. That includes using all of the wonderous medical aids we have discovered. To deny such help is to spurn the gifts from God. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Hi Jar,
While I consider Gene Scott to be a faithless, disgusting liar, bigot and a foulmouthed demigod, I don't see what he is doing as any abandonment of faith. You forgot to add blasphemer! But, I believe that the majority of Christians would indeed accept the medical help for the reason you pointed out. But, I was just wondering if any of our members would go against their faith when faced with what may be the final curtain. When you think of people such as 'Des-da-moaner' I seriously think that she would trust God until the end, perhaps 'Wise' would be the same. Equally, perhaps a few of the atheists here would panic and try praying as a final option. Brian.

Jar,
And that reminds of the atheist who fell off a very high sheer cliff but managed to grab hold of a small bush growing from a niche and there he hung unable to find a way up or down when he noticed the shrub was being pulled from it's root hold in the rock and soon he would plunged to certain death on the rocks below. In desperation he looked to the heavens and cried out "If there is a God up there please hear me. I know I've not believed in you all my life but if you exist and will save my life I will change my ways and believe in you and spread your message to the corners of the earth, anything but please help me!" Clouds formed. The skies darkened and then a light fell from the heavens and a deep voice reverberated over the countryside, "I am here and I have heard your prayer and accept your pledge. All you have to do is have FAITH in ME and I will save you from all harm. Now all you have to do is LET GO OF THE BUSH AND I WILL CATCH YOU." The atheist gripped the bush even more tightly as he looked downfrom his dizzying heights to the hard jagged rocks below and thought hard for a moment before looking up to the sky and calling out, "Is there someone else up there?"

But, I was just wondering if any of our members would go against their faith when faced with what may be the final curtain. I don't people can know how they will react when faced with death until it actually happens. They can be pretty sure, but not 100%. If you say there no absolutes, I ask you, are you absolutely sure?

Hi General,
I tend to agree. Perhaps when faced with the reality many people would try anything. I prayed for both my mum and dad to live but they both died, although I was a Christian then, my minister basically said that God knows what is best. Pretty hard lesson that day! I just thought it unusual that a televangelist who promotes faith healing starts off by trusting in God and then goes for medical help. What if God was testing Gene Scott and was going to cure him only in the final stages? Bit of a bummer for Scotty, who obviously cannot believe in his heart that Jesus is Lord and Saviour. Oh well, I am sure there's plenty cigars where Gene is going, and more than enough fire around to light them with. Personally, I cannot imagine that I would cry out to God for healing if I was in this situation, but it is difficult to be certain. I might be tempted to say 'amitabha' ten times and hope that the Bodhsatvva takes me to his pure land! Brian

I wonder if any of those harmed by refusing medical aid would agree with you. When you preach faith-healing it's live by the word, die by the word.

Hi Hawk,
When you preach faith-healing it's live by the word, die by the word. This is essentially what I thought. I thought that faith-healing requires faith, faith that God can cure you at any time. This just proves that Gene Scott really isn't a Christian at all, he has NO faith in God. Brian.

Dr Scott must have had his Good Sense removed at some time, too: when it gets difficult to pee, and you're a man over 50, it's time to go get the ol' prostate checked. Hell, that's what killed Frank Zappa! How much more warning do you need?

Well, I doubt that Gene Scott would much care if it's some other person.
Gene Scott's claims of faith healing are on a par with all his other theology. It's Gene (beam the money up) Scottie. Many, many years ago when I was just a lad in my late teens I was one of the first responders on an electrocution. Two kids were playing in the basement and one touched an improperly grounded sump pump and was electrocuted. His brother tried to pull him away and he too got shocked. Their babysitter called the fire department. When I arrived on the scene I used a pike pole to pull the kids away from the sump pump and began mouth to mouth and cpr on one while one of the other guys worked on the other. I had gotten a pulse and was continuing mouth to mouth when the parents arrived with their pastor and they commanded us to stop giving aid while they prayed over the kids. Both kids died. I doubt that was in anyway the will of GOD,and I always thought the pastor and the parents should have been charged with murder. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Gene showes that he had faith, he believes in the Almighty Dollar. I'm sure he used money to pay for his operation that had been sent in by people who delayed their own medical procedure so he betrayed his belief and his congeregation. Bet you theyr'e praying for him and will be back in the pews thanking jesus for his survival; if he lives.

Thing is, if your ship was going down, and the sharks were circling, wouldn`t it be just common sense to say 'Any gods out there?'

Could the news of Scott's condition be the reason that willowtree was prone to angry, paranoid rantings recently?
