Author | Topic: How big is our Galaxy. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

One step in determining some minimum age for our universe would be to find out how big our local neighborhood is.
Our solar system, the backyard, is only one yard in the neighborhood of our galaxy, so how big is the galaxy? Once we know the size of the neighborhood, the next question is "Where are we in relation to the center of the neighborhood?" Suggested for Bible A&I

And this is an image we can actually see?

Well, while we cannot see in infrared, we can detect in infrared.
How do we determine that the galactic center is 26,000 light years away? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Later work with other wavelengths of life confirmed this. I assume you mean light not life. So currently, how accurate would you say the 26,000 light year distance to the Galactic Center and 100,000 Light year diameter figure for the local Galaxy is? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Okay.
So what forms of information have reached us from the Galactic Center that we can definitely detect and measure? Visible light? X-Ray? Infrared? Others? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

and all tend to agree that we are ~25,000 light years from the Galactic Center, and that our Galaxy is about 100,000 Light years across?

So we are beginning have a pretty good idea about the size of our local neighborhood. But is there something analogous to a city that our neighborhood is within?

So can you place some numbers and confidence levels on any of that?
I gather from your post that the Local group is ~10,000,000 light years across. How far are we from the furthest edge of our local group? How do we know that? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

SO for those of us that are dumber than a red brick, what does "This wall-then-filament structure" mean?

Alright, we're starting to get to some really big numbers. To help an old man understand this, let me ask a few more questions.
So a Wall might contain 10 Million Galaxies and a Filament about 1 Million Galaxies. Is there more than one Wall? More than one Filament? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Okay, so let me summarize.
There are several hundred walls, each wall contains about 10 Million Galaxies. There are several hundred filaments, each filament contains about 1 Million Galaxies. So at a minimum there is no less than 2 Billion Galaxies. Is that correct? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Okay, so 100 Billion Galaxies.
How many stars might that be? This message has been edited by jar, 01-13-2006 10:13 PM Aslan is not a Tame Lion

That's a bunch of stars.
Let me ask you a question. What would night look like if the Biblical Creationists happen to be right and all those stars are in a sphere that's 6000 light years in radius based on the earth?. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Okay, so what would be the smallest universe that would still allow life on earth?
Is it possible to even make such an estimate? Aslan is not a Tame Lion
