There are sensible alternatives and silly ones. What makes your compelling?
Here is a book, written by a publishing particle physics theorist, that proposes an interesting solution to the dark matter problem, perfectly explains the missing neutrino problems, perfectly explains huge extrasolar planets with tiny orbits, perfectly explains the Tungaska event (no meteoric fragments), restores parity symetry to particle physics and is falsifiable within 5 years:

Index of /~foot
It proposes Mirror Matter (in additon to antimatter) and in this scenario dark matter may be completely invisible stars, planets and matter that is right handed (rather than our left handed matter) and interacts only thoruhg gravity (plus a small photon-mirror photon mixing force). Of course it is completely mainstream in ever sense except that String and GUT theorists are unimpressed. It has been reported in the popular press as well as peer reveiwed journals.
This theory should not be confused with science ficton ideas of mirror worlds in which there is an exact replica of each world and person!
