I find it hard to believe that we are without question the only beings on this planet (let alone the universe) with the potential to become "intelligent".
Assuming evolution is correct and in my mind there is no question, evolution happened.
Take a look at Gorillas.
Gorillas genuinely display the same characteristics you may expect to have found in early humans. Caring for and teaching their young, co-operation, complex communication and indisputable displays of emotion.
Given time and the removal of interference by humans I imagine it would be entirely possible for Gorillas to develop civilisation as we understand it.
I invite not only challenges but if anyone has ideas about other animals with intelligent potential I would like to read them.
