There is a general assumption that the entire theory of evolution was never discussed prior to Linnaeus, Lamarck, Wallace and Darwin. This is a common misconeption.
Actually, that may be common among Biblical Creationists, but it is certainly not the case among anyone who has examined either the TOE or the history of the search for explanations for how Evolution took place.
