In England, you are much more likely to receive a negative response for coming out as actively religious than you are for either being apathetic about religion or actively religious.

As has been discussed earlier in this thread, by and large religion is regarded as a private matter in England (it can be different elsewhere in the UK but England makes up the vast majority of the population).
Maybe the crowd I've run with in my life is not typical, but the experiences I've had in the states do not involve talking about religious beliefs at your basic cocktail party.
