Still trying to get access to Faith pc via VNC. Have mailed her with some instructions in the hope of nailing down a floating IP address.

So. Is this more or less the plan?
When I go to bed tonight, say around midnight, which will be 8AM in Ireland, or later if I happen to stay up longer, I'll close AOL, also close VNC?? (which has been open for days now), and reopen it, and check the IP number and post it here using IE, and maybe NWR can give the IP number that comes up for me here, disable PC cillin again and go to sleep and expect that everything will just work out somehow or other. Ho ho ho. You DO have the password, right? Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Ok, I'll only ask one more time, I swear. What exactly is your problem now?

Iano is trying to access my computer via VNC. So far he has been unable to.

This post has been edited because I had a few things wrong earlier. These are the basic facts:
AOL is off, I'm here via IE. Opening VNC, I have IP 71.142.133.32 The IP address for this post is the same as the above:71.142.133.32 I'll try it again later to be sure, when I disable the firewall. This is the IP address that is at the upper right hand corner of my last post on this thread:
That's an AOL web proxy that your browser is using. That won't be of any use to iano.
207.200.116.131 Opening VNC, I have IP 71.142.133.32
Okay. That's an SBC dsl address. It is the kind of address that iano could use, if it is stable. But your IP seems to be changing too often. When you posted Message 291, you were using 69.111.243.192 (also an SBC dsl address). If your address is changing that often, then it will have changed before iano gets around to trying to access your system. Your modem settings are probably such that when your line has been idle for a while, the modem relinquishes its IP address. Then later, when you try to access a web page, it gets a fresh IP address. That is going to make things difficult for iano. In Message 258, I outlined how to change the modem settings so that it holds onto its IP address. I was perhaps a little too terse. Feel free to ask if you need more details. Or we could try to get into chat at a mutually convenient time, so I could provide step by step assistance. In your Message 258, the first two links get me only a little logo in the upper left hand corner that says Broadband Reports.com. There's no other content on those pages. The third link has some content to it.
I'm not going to be able to get into this tonight. I'm unbelievably tired. Sorry Iano. I'll let nwr walk me through this tomorrow sometime I hope. If it isn't one thing it's another. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Faith, just buy an airline ticket for one of the geeks here to fly to where you are and fix whatever problem you have. At this point, it seems like an easier and faster solution. (I was joking)
But seriously, are you still trying to get iano to get into your comp to fix that printer driver installation problem? Personally, I've never encountered or heard of anyone encounter such a problem before.

Oops! Sorry about that. It seems that the site containing those links is only allowing them to be accessed when referenced from another link at their site. I did test the links when posting, but my browser was using a cache copy. Here is how to get to them. Start by opening this FAQ page. There are several links at the top of that page. Click on the link labelled "Connection Information Page". That will give what you should have seen with the first of my links. Later, click on the link labelled "Connection Configuration Page" to see what should have been in the second of my links. Compassionate conservatism - bringing you a kinder, gentler torture chamber

Dear Gasby,
The printer problem was solved a long time ago. We have been trying to get Iano on board via VNC for days now, for various other reasons, one of which is that I'm not getting much in the way of graphics through my new DSL. Simply getting VNC to operate has become the problem of the moment. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Thanks NWR. I'll do all that later. Today I'm not going to have much time.

If it isn't one thing it's another. So today I'm too busy for all this I'm afraid. I'll check back with you later. Thanks for hanging in there.

No hurry. I'm kind of looking forward to being able to do this. I have a few mates who are even more computer illiterate than me and this would be a handy tool to be able to use

It is most likely a problem involving M$ security setups. A couple question. First, what browser are you using and which version. You can usually get that information from the help menu item in the browser. At the bottom of the drop down menu you should see about. Post the contents of that here if possible.
