German Election

The reason the rest of the world takes note of US elections is not just for military reasons. It's economic too.Whether the US embarks on raging austerity or fiscal stimulus matters to the world economy and (eventually and I admit rather abstractly) people's lives.In terms of elections (because China doesn't have them) Germany is arguably the next most significant player in that respect.

In Finland I have no doubt that US election news is given a high profile. I'd be willing to bet the German election got a reasonable shout in their media too.Apart from anything else Scandanavians tend to be rather less parochial than Americans (or Brits) in their interests.I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get many Svandanavian "stiffs" proclaiming that any election in which they don't vote is completely irrelevant. Whilst that point of view seems to be rather widespread amongst North American EvC members. Are you suggesting that the reason the rest of the world takes such an interest in American elections is purely dowjn to US war mongering?

The US 'Fiscal Cliff' and it's potential impact has been headline news for days here (and on the French and Spanish news channels that my wife watches too)I think you underestimate just how prominent news on global economic issues is. With regard to the German election - The coverage here was almost entirely in the context of German economic infleunce, the Euro etc.
