I read this article on Pharyngula several days ago; I didn't intend on posting it, but there is a current discussion on the Beneficial Mutations thread about the relevance of HOX genes in evolution.
Basically, the article is about the investigation into how early the actual HOX genes appeared in the evolutionary history of metazoans. There are some hints as to the relevance of the HOX genes to evolution; it's sketchy, since that wasn't the main subject of the article, but maybe WK can get some ideas on how to explain the issues to NJ.
P.S., Is this the right place for the links I have been providing lately? Or would the In the News forum be more appropriate?
