To jazzns
On the thread Ben started for the purpose of arriving at an understanding of the methodology of YEC arguments that would cause less headbutting at EvC, various side issues kept coming up from the usual arguments. One of them is my assertion that the continents appear to be pushed apart from the continental ridge. Jazzns insists that they are pulled apart, not pushed apart (but he nevertheless agrees that the source of the movement is the continental ridge), and says he will explain it to me on a separate thread as it is off topic on that one.
Fact vs interpretation/theory
[Incidentally, jazz, I realized after I posted that message that it may not exactly be a fact-theory dispute, but a dispute about the facts.]
Also, I know that it is preferred that topics be narrowly focused if possible, but in this case I don't think there's a lot to be said -- either the action is pulling or it is pushing and once that is established there's little else to say. But I do like the title YEC approaches (to which I added "Bible-based"), which continues the theme of the previous thread, and YEC approaches to more than one typical problem could be discussed on it if that's acceptable. We'd continue thinking about how YECs formulate arguments and how they might be accommodated at EvC while being free to discuss specific instances beyond where Ben wanted his thread to go. For instance we could bring over other off-topic posts that got started on that thread and continue them here.
Although this thread will be addressing scientific questions it must be open for creationists to post on. Perhaps Theological Creationism and ID?
====================================
Edit: Turns out jazz posted some links on Links and Information. I mistakenly answered him there with this:
I looked at your first link since you weren't showing up to respond, and found this animation of the movement at the continental ridge
Now this animation is EXACTLY what I've been visualizing. It is clearly PUSHING magma to left and right. Perhaps we are having a terminological problem here. Please explicitly explain how my description of the movement on that animation as pushing is wrong.
All the following is what I already learned from my own researches, and "pushing" is consistent with it all.
The weaknesses between the diverging plates fill with molten rock from below. Sea water cools the molten rock, which quickly solidifies, forming new oceanic lithosphere. This continuous process builds a chain of volcanoes and rift valleys called a mid-ocean ridge or spreading ridge.
Little by little, as each batch of molten rock erupts at the mid-ocean ridge, the newly created oceanic plate moves away from the ridge where it was created.
Picture a vertical model of the same action, a set of double pocket doors that slide open from the center where they meet. You insert your hands to slide them apart. That is PUSHING them apart. You could stand in such a position that the exertion of your hand would be a pulling, but you wouldn't be in the center between the doors then, but on the side you are pulling toward. From the center the action is a pushing. If the doors were made of a material that could fold and ripple from that much pressure on them, they would.

Re: To jazzns
Looks like you two are continuing on the other thread after all. I'm inclined to let things be there; other activity on the thread is dead. Just try to keep in mind the purpose of the discussion, and do your best to tie it back to the original question (the methodology / approach, rather than the individual facts of the situation).
The title of this thread and the one you're posting in seem basically the same to me. Given these facts, I'm inclined to let this one sit here and see if you two work through things in the other thread. If for some reason you want to move forward with a separate thread, let me know.
As a note, I do think creating a new thread was a good idea; just given the closeness of the two, and the fact that the discussion has proceeded, I think in this case it's best to move along as is. If I had been around earlier to promote this quickly before discussion continued, I would have done so.
If I don't hear anything back from you, I'll assume you're fine with this thread being closed.
Thanks.
