This is really a quite short straight forward question but I couldn't think of any existing thread to ask it on....

Why do we have the lineage of Joseph? he's not Jesus's father so why does it matter? (Clearly I've missed something obvious).
​
Moreover there seem to be two genealogies for Jesus in the New Testament? Why?
