It may be that your old avatar is cached, and that you can change it, but your browser isn't updating to reflect that change.
If you're using Internet Explorer, try changing your avatar, then going to Tools>Internet Options>General and clicking the Delete Files button and confirming. Once that's done, refresh any EvC page that has your avatar on it.

Caching's a bitch. At home I can get rid of the cache in the way someone has already described. At work there's an additional cache that my place of business maintains at its point of contact with the Internet (I don't know why they do this), and old images can stay around for days after they've been changed.
When you change your avatar at EvC Forum, it overwrites the old avatar and the filename doesn't change, but I think I might change this sometime soon. I've run into this problem myself, and it's pretty annoying. As part of the fix I would keep around old avatar images, and users could select from among their old images or add a new one. Each image having a unique filename, there would be no delays due to caching.

Try "clicking on the avatar"
Re-enable the avatar. Then, if it is still displaying the old version, left click on the avatar to bring up a full scale view. I think that doing this might force your browser to read the current file rather than pulling the image out of the cache. After doing this, reload the page the avatar was displayed on and your ccurrent avatar will be there. Or maybe not.

waste of bandwith
Thaks for the replies, but I've come to think that avatars are a waste of bandwith. I want to see what a poster says, not what kind of fantasy they have.

Re: waste of bandwith
The don't actually take much bandwidth. Your browser keeps a cache copy of the avatars that you are seeing, so that most of the time you are not downloading them.
My signature probably takes more bandwidth than my avatar, because you download my signature whenever you load a message I have written (and have enabled the signature). You only occasionally download my avatar.

Then you better stay out of either the Science or Religious sections, depending on your convictions.

Thanks for the info, if even percy has trouble with the avatars then what can the rest of us expect.

Re: Thanks
I went without an avatar for several months. It's not that important, one way or the other.
Some people change their avatar frequently, and that's what I don't get. The avatar perhaps makes it a little easier for people to recognize you. But we should still value content (what is posted) over form (the appearance, including avatar).
