I deeply regret to report to our creationist friends that my 12-year-old daughter has just received the Outstanding Science Student of the Year award at her middle school. Since this year's curriculum was heavily weighted towards life sciences/biology (including evolution), it appears from the creationist perspective that yet another innocent American child has been vilely corrupted by the horrifying public school science teaching. No doubt in subsequent years we will see a continual slide into the depths of the dark side - even unto orthodontal work.
On the other hand, for my evo colleagues, I am incredibly proud and delighted to report that my daughter received this award. I informed her that she was now a certified probationary member of the Vast Worldwide Evolutionist Conspiracy (tm), eligible for one new science book every year. She immediately requested the "Darwin Awards" as her first installment. (I'm not entirely sure she quite gets the concept of "science book" yet. I suppose that's why she's probationary only). Anyway, I couldn't resist letting you all know that we might have another scientist on our hands some day...

Way to go.
Congratulations to you and your daughter. Tell her for me that it just gets more and more exciting as time goes on. The more she learns the more she will find even more things to question. And remind her that we are all counting on learning the new things she will add in the future.

Party time...let the budding scientist know that we are ALL proud of her accomplishment.

Congratulations to your daughter!

Congradulations to your daughter!!!
Oh, I can't wait till my son is old enough to do science projects. That sounds like so much fun.
Congrats to you, too, for guiding her in that direction. The world could always use another female scientist.

Thanks for all the congratulations, everyone. We're really proud of the little shrimp. She especially liked the balloons, O Queen.
To clarify a bit - it wasn't for a particular project. I'm not even sure the school she attends has a science fair. She got the award for: maintaining a 98.5% academic average in science, coming in 4th at the regional Science Olympiad competition (she designed and built a rubber-band-powered airplane), and achieving a 99+ percentile score on the Virginia Science Standards of Learning exam. The award also required recommendation and approval by a committee of all the science faculty at the school. Tough crowd to please. Anyway, thanks for your best wishes.
