I frequently get 'you are not authorised to reply in this forum' messages when attempting to reply to a message. Trying again generally works.

Mee two
I'm moving up in the world. Last time I was me three.
But that is usually a sign of bandwidth issues or index rebuilding so it is most likely host based errors and not really permissions.

Thanks for reporting this. I'll probably need more data, so let me know if this continues, and whether it happens more in some forums than others, and any other user information you can think of.
Your access to a forum is a static property that can only be changed manually through the board's control panel, so leaving out the possibility of moderator misbehavior, there must be a software problem, and it must be pretty obscure if it's intermittent.
Is anyone else having the same difficulty?

It really appears to be a timeout issue
since it is intermittent. It does not appear to be forum or thread related but I notice that when I get that error, a retry usually works perfectly.

Well, this isn't good. I apologize for the difficulty.
At my next opportunity, I'll install some data gathering code that triggers whenever someone is refused posting permission. This should give me some data to go on.

Oh, just had a brainstorm! I think I know what is causing this.
I'll provide some explanation below for those who are interested, but first, anyone who is intermittently being refused posting access should go to their Profile page, go to the bottom of that page, and click on the "Click here to delete all cookies set by this forum" link. Now you'll have to log in again, but I'm hopeful this will fix it. Members who reset cookies but still experience the problem should post a message to this thread to let me know there's still a problem.
The new software revision saves cookies in a slightly different way than it used to. Cookies used to be specific to the cgi-bin directory where the Perl modules are kept, but this made it impossible for HTML files in other parts of the board's directory tree to access the cookies, and I needed this access in order to provide login info at the tops of message pages, so the directory was changed from //http://www.///cgi-bin to just .
But this can cause confusion in some browsers, and the only way I know to eliminate it is to delete all cookies. The intermittent nature of the problem isn't a symptom I would have expected, but the general behavior is certainly consistent with a cookle problem.

You made me break it!!!!
I cleared my cookies using the procedure you posted, and now as soon as I close all my EvC windows (Opera 7.23, XP Pro SP1) you forget me ... when I open up a new EvC window I'm not logged in. I have definitely checked the "remember me" box, and here's what I have for a cookie:

It's not cookie related
purged all of our cookies and problem persists.

The Programmer's Ode
Twas the night before Implementation
And all through the house,
Not a program was working
Not even a browse.
The programmers hung by their tubes in despair,
With hopes that a miracle soon would be there.
The users were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of inquiries danced in their heads.
When out on the COPE there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a super programmer (with a six pack of beer).
His resume glowed with experience too rare,
He turned out great code with a bit-pushers flair.
More rapid than eagles, his programs they came,
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name:
On Update! On Add! On Inquiry! On Delete!
On Batch Jobs! On Closing! On Function Complete!
His eyes were glazed over, fingers nimble and lean,
From weekends and nights in front of a screen.
A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Turning specs into code; then turned with a jerk;
And laying his finger upon the 'Enter' key,
The system came up and worked perfectly.
The updates updated; the deletes, they deleted;
The inquiries inquired, and closings completed.
He tested each whistle and tested each bell,
With nary an ABEND, and all had gone well.
The system was finished, the tests were concluded,
The clients' last changes were even included,
The client exclaimed with a snarl and a taunt,
It's just what I asked for, but not what I want!

The person who sees this problem, please copy the exact message text and post it here. That should help me narrow it down a little.

The problem is that it doesn't happen all the time. For me, it happens like once every 6 times I press the reply button.
