ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- A suburban Atlanta school board that put stickers in its high school science books that said evolution is "a theory, not a fact" abandoned the legal battle Tuesday after four years.
The Cobb County board agreed in federal court never to use a similar sticker or to undermine the teaching of evolution in science classes.
In return, the parents who sued over the stickers agreed to drop all legal action.
"We certainly think that it's a win not just for our clients but for all students in Cobb County and, really, all residents of Georgia," said Beth Littrell of the ACLU of Georgia.
The school board placed the stickers on the cover of biology books in 2002 after a group of parents complained that evolution was being taught to the exclusion of other theories, including the Biblical story of creation.
The stickers read: "This textbook contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered."

I never really saw too big a problem there. You might think the kids would notice that what they were being taught was called "The THEORY of Evolution" and so realize that it was a theory, but then I remembered that is was Georgia and Cobb County as well.

Well, the only thing that I thought was weird is that Evolution was singled out.
They didn't have that stick for the THEORY of gravity... or the GERM theory.

yeah, it's funny how they selectively apply the "its only a theory".
no problems with the theory of gravity (unless you read the Onion), but problems with the theory of evolution because it's just a theory.
you'd think they could just consistently apply the argument. guess not.

Someone read the tea leaves before making the taxpayers of Cobb County liable for more legal expenses in a doomed promotion of pseudoscience.
Good.

Disappointing outcome.
I'm actually very disappointed in this outcome as I understand that Cobb County's next planned move was to force all the churchs in the county to post disclaimers on the covers of all their bibles stating that the existance of god is only a theory and that paritioners should keep an open mind on that subject.
