I have a new topic proposal. In an organism there are recessive and dominant genes. Cells have pairs of chromosomes. Each chromosome in a pair contains genes for the same characteristics. The genes on a cell are called alleles. Each allele is either dominant or recessive. If the organism inherits the dominant trait the organism is shaped accordingly.
Some definitions are: a phenotype is the physical attributs of an organism i.e. tall, short, green or blue. A genotype is the allele type such as BB, bb or Bb. Heterozygous is the genotype of BB if bb. Homozygous is the type of Bb. This is also known as a carriers of other traits.
There is term for when people, or animals, choose the best candidate to mate with. This is selective breeding. An example would be people choosing animals due to their phenotypes i.e. color or height. Animals breed with one another depending on size, color and mating displays.
Humans have 46 chromosomes. 2 are sex chromosomes. Males are "46,XY" and females "46,XX". This leaves a lot of room for differentiation with recessive genes. If there is a carrier involved changes will occur in the future.
The new estimate for the number of genes a person has is 20,000 to 25,000. That leaves many posibilities of combinations just in humans. Dogs have 100,000 genes and there are matching genes from both the sire and the dam. No wonder there are so many different breeds.

Is there a question or discussion in there?

I would like it to become a discussion. Suggestions?

    Re: answer
For a start I think you should follow Asgara's advice and propose a question or a specific topic for discussion. At the moment you are merely presenting your idea as a given. You could ask if the progressive escape of recessive traits from dominanace is a plausible explanation for the genetic diversity we observe, rather than merely claiming that it is. Posing a question is a much better way of motivating discussion.
I think you should also provide a reference if you stick by your claim that the dog genome has 100,000, this figure seems very high to me. The dog page at ensembl, which curates genomic data, estimates 20,439 genes in the dog genome.

    Re: answer
The question then changes to do different species emerge from recessive traits?

    Re: answer
Why don't you rewrite the original post as a new reply here with that question emphasized and change the thread title to something that describes the topic. When that is done I will look at promoting it.

Hey alphablu82! I agree with the idea of rewording your topic.
If you still want to start a topic, go to your first post and push the edit button. You can even change your title if you want!
Get back to us by January 31, 2006 if you want to begin a thread.
The reason that we monitor new topics is that we want to make sure that the topics are interesting enough to elicit a response and carry on for more than 3 or 4 replies.
It is usually best to start a topic with a simple and direct point and then to decide which forum your presentation fits best in.
