Re: More evidence...
Oops! | The Humane Society of the United States
Grizzlies are heavier than black bears, though: the males average 500 lbs
it sais male grizzlies average 500lbs with the largest dominant male grizzlies weighing 850lbs
so a 500lb male grizzly vs a 500lb delta lion would be A great match
the grizzlies that fought lions were calfornia exctinct grizzlies, they have been exctinct for over 100 years, they were much larger than modern grizzly bears with an average male weighing 900-1200lbs so of course the lion would be doomed
anyway a liger that weighs 900lbs would destroy a 500lb grizzly, so i think a 500 delta lion vs a average 500lb male grizzly would be a great fight

Re: More evidence...
i think u meaant a coastal brown bear vs a liger would be a fair match
because inland grizzlies only average 500lbs so a liger would surely destroy an average grizzly
http://www.mountainnature.com/wildlife/Bears/BearID.htm
Size is a poor identifier as both bears vary greatly in size. Male grizzlies average 225 kg (500 lbs), with females averaging around 160 kg (350 lbs). Large bears may tip the scales at 360 kg (800 lbs).
se male average grizzles only average 500lbs with huge ones weighing 800lbs
so a 500lb delta lion would be a great fight with a 500lb average grizzly
of course a coastal brown bear which averages 800lbs and the exctinct calfornia grizzly which weighed 900-1200 would beat any lion
but since average grizzly bears only average 500lbs that means a 500lb lion vs an average 500lb grizzly would be a great fight

Re: More evidence...
i would remind you that the grizzly bears that killed the lions in the old wild west calfornia pit fights, were huge calfornia grizzlies which are now exctinct, these huge exctinct calfornia grizzlies were much much much larger than ur average modern 500lb grizzly, these exctinct calfornia grizzlies weighed 900-1200lbs where as a modern grizzly averages 500lbs
so obviously an exctinct calfornia grizzly that weighed 900-1200 would beat a lion, im talking about a modern 500lb grizzly vs a modern 500lb delta lion, which would be a great fight

Oops - 403 Error
"THE calfornia grizzly bear is a lordly animal. An ordinary-sized one will weigh from nine hundred to twelve hundred pounds, a large one a ton."
so i agree with you that a 900-1200lb exctinct calfornia grizzly will beat a lion or tiger, im just saying that at equal weights, such as an average 500LB modern grizzly vs a 500lb delta lion woul be a great match with the lion having the slight edge

claims shams

also wow u are on crack, David Minquelle the leading biologist of the wcs [wildlife conservation society]claims in his books, that because bears have reduced collarbones that cats are far stronger than bears lb for lb than bears, and trust me he knows alot more than u,
In the immortal words of Michael Moore...
WABOBS (see if you can figure out what that means....)
This biologist you are talking about sounds like he has a screw loose. What books are you talking about, pray tell????If Neanderthals had reduced collarbones, that would make them weaker than modern humans?? (Neanderthals where far stronger than any man)
If Chimps had reduced collarbones, rthat would make them weaker than humans??

also elephants and hippopotamuses are digitgrade, and a Hipp is much stronger lb for lb than a bear lol
A hippo or elephant of the same size would not be stronger than a bear. The one sole reason they can squash a Bear is because of their IMMENSE SIZE

Collar bone
bcw3 writes:
Because of a bears reduced collar bones, they do not have the strength potential of ungulates and big cats.
Horses are ungulates
http://www.ultimateungulate.com/
Do horses have stronger forelimbs than bears???
And Big cats ALSO have reduced collar bones
Natural History Collections: Carnivores
Do they have less strength than ungulates in lb for lb terms ie forelimbs?

goats are ungulates
Animals like deer and goats are also ungulates
http://www.Montereybay.com/creagrus/etungulates.html
Are they stronger than bears in relative terms?? Do they have much stronger forelimbs???

a large one over a ton
I take it you didn't read the source I showed that dealt with that, among other bear subjects:
Page not found – Bowhunting.Net
Look at it's section about weights of bears. IN the 1800's there where reports of Black Bears that got up to nearly 2000 lbs! Kamchatcan Brown Bears where recorded up to 2500 lbs (they only get up to 1200 lbs) and (get this) California Grizzlies over 2,300 lbs! Tall Tales The article quotes Ben east of "Bears" when he heared that Few grizzlies of record weight come from a part of the country where accurate scales are found
It also quote's naturalist Adolph Murray's famous words:
"a bear the longest distance from a scale often weighs the most"

fantasy burs
Given the above reasons, it doesn't surprise most that Bear Expert Robert H. Busch would say in "The Grizzly Almanac", and I quote:
"Campfire tales of 2,000-plus-pound trophies are pure fantasy."

Re: fantasy burs
well ugulates dont use their forelimmbs, but in terms of upmost strength a ugulate would surpass a bear, frelimb strength is not only wat i mean when i say lb for lb, body, strength back length strength alot of things, so yes all in all the ugulate is much stronger

Re: fantasy burs
like i said forelimbs arent the only thing that define proportional strength of course a bear would have stronger strength than a ugulate and a cat in forelmibs, im talking about overall lb for lb strength which the bear cant comepete

Re: fantasy burs
so it seems we agreed a bear might have stronger forelimbs but overall strength they cant compete with similiar sized ugulates and bears
