Re: Herb
I hate to tell you that you're wrong CF
Oh, I'm sure that's a lie.
Both pronuciations are accepted
Accepted by who?
and both are in the dictionary
Well, that's hardly indicative of anything. Dictionaries describe, not proscribe. I don't recall asserting that nobody pronounces the "H", only that they shouldn't.
Futher evidence that it is incorrect is the fact that there's only one pronunciation for words that have "herb" as a prefix, and that pronunciation has a silent "h".
Your mispronounciation is indeed common; which is why its in the dictionary. It is not, however, recognized by the majority of speakers of English as being correct.

Re: Herb
Dictionaries describe, not proscribe.
Where can I find the proscriptions of words?
I don't recall asserting that nobody pronounces the "H", only that they shouldn't.
quote:
I hope you're talking about a person and not a plant, because "herb" the plant is "erb" no matter where you live.
I live in my house and its pronounced herb there.
It is not, however, recognized by the majority of speakers of English as being correct.
Futher evidence that it is incorrect is the fact that there's only one pronunciation for words that have "herb" as a prefix, and that pronunciation has a silent "h".
You're just plain wrong. Maybe this can convince you:
quote:
Usage Note: The word herb, which can be pronounced with or without the (h), is one of a number of words borrowed into English from French. The (h) sound had been lost in Latin and was not pronounced in French or the other Romance languages, which are descended from Latin, although it was retained in the spelling of some words. In both Old and Middle English, however, h was generally pronounced, as in the native English words happy and hot. Through the influence of spelling, then, the h came to be pronounced in most words borrowed from French, such as haste and hostel. In a few other words borrowed from French the h has remained silent, as in honor, honest, hour, and heir. And in another small group of French loan words, including herb, humble, human, and humor, the h may or may not be pronounced depending on the dialect of English. In British English, herb and its derivatives, such as herbaceous, herbal, herbicide, and herbivore, are pronounced with h. In American English, herb and herbal are more often pronounced without the h, while the opposite is true of herbaceous, herbicide, and herbivore, which are more often pronounced with the h.
Bold and italic added for emphasis
Just wondering....Do you say "a historic event" or "an historic event"? (with or without the 'h'?)

Well, I'm convinced. (This is the new, better Crashfrog, who will admit when he has been shown to be wrong.)
I live in my house and its pronounced herb there.
Well, around my house we'd call the people at your house idiots who don't know how to say the word "herb". Ultimately, all language is idiomatic, I guess.
Do you say "a historic event" or "an historic event"? (with or without the 'h'?)
With the H.

Welcome to EvC forum.
Well, around my house we'd call the people at your house idiots who don't know how to say the word "herb".
Whats funny is that you guys are the idiots and assume that the people who are different from you are the ones who are wrong.
And from what I saw of the old CF, he used to take this farther than the pronunciation of words.

Well, we're all creationists about something, don't you agree?
You've helped me change that a little bit, and so I thank you.

Yeah. I used to get a little ridiculous about stuff like this.

Well, you're welcome, but I didn't intend to change anyone, be what you will. Although, you were the most annoying person on this forum, IMO.
Yeah. I used to get a little ridiculous about stuff like this.

Are you still a Secular Humanist?

it's like a soda v. pop v. coke thing. around here, nearly everyone says the h.
(also, this bit was shamelessly stolen from an eddie izzard routine -- i didn't make it up.)

I just got tired of threads being about my behavior and not my arguments.
