It's still a theory. Inductive logic can never truly "prove" anything. It's called the "inductive fallacy" - just because you observe the same thing 100 times, or 1000 times, or even 100,000,000 times, you still can't be absolutely sure it'll happen the 100,000,001st time.
So it's still the "germ theory of disease" because theory is the best you can do in science. Of course, I'd rather be tentativly right than absolutely wrong.

It is still called the germ "theory" of disease. It is an explanation for the nature of many diseases. As an explanation that works very well and has a lot of good evidence for it is no longer an hypothesis. It is a theory. One more time:
In science a theory is NOT an educated guess. It is a complex explanation for a wide range of observations. IT doesn't become less of a theory when more evidence is obtained.
Besides, I've had a number of biblical literalists tell me that demons do indeed cause diseases. So they'd be quick to call it "just a theory"

I don't believe in god, so I don't have much to add to the discussion. Sorry.
What I am interested in is the contradictions involved in people who call themselves "Biblical literalists." As a student of literature I've found it's impossible to take any literature "literally" - personal interpretation is always a part of reading a text. I don't know if you consider yourself a literalist or not...

I do believe in God or a higher power (I find it hard to believe everything popped out of nowhere) but I believe In Evolution and other scientific ideas I will even except the BIG Bang but I can't Believe that it Just happened without any help of being created.........
I am sorry to believers but how can you put your faith in a book about God that man wrote? it hardly makes sense........... I mean nowadays people dismiss Greek gods as myths or fairy Tales.. to me the Bible is no more acurate then all of those "myths" so why are there so many believers? I mean check out my topic in the Evolution form. we came to the Point that why would God create a whale with legs before a modern whale or a bird with reptile features before true birds? and this is just one thing we can discredit the Bible for is saying everything was created Separately..........
quote:
I said this in that topic
It took me a while for me to Realize what I believe I was brought up A Catholic and I struggled to find what I think is the truth and what makes more sense I was Always into Science and I always found myself Trying to Keep the 2 things separate. but there came a time when I couldn't anymore I needed to know what I truly believed and here it is God made Life. and gave it the Amazing ability to Change to help itself Adapt and Get better. This amazing Ability resulted in many Creatures including us! I don't want to say I am right for sure because I don't know but I am asking you to find out what you believe also don't Listen to your Parents on this! find OUT what YOU believe and what makes sense TO YOU find yourself not just follow traditon.
if it turns out to be what you think is the truth thats fine but don't be a follower think for yourself

Clarify the topic subject or close topic?

This topic is a pretty mucked up mess. I've reviewed things, and didn't find any clear cut "sank and gave in".
DC85, I suggest you either 1)Clearly (re)state the/your main object/intent of/for this topic or 2)request that the topic be closed.
Either will work for me.
Cheers,
Adminnemooseus

While everyone here has done a great job of explaining the nutshell version of the Nature of Science, I thought I'd post the link to a really good essay that I use a lot in these situations:
science - The Skeptic's Dictionary - Skepdic.com
