The Political Compass
This site allows one to privately answer a series of questions and then displays the position of your answers on a 2-D grid. This thread is to discuss how one feels about each of the questions and the over all result. How meaninful, relevant, biased, hard to answer or whatever you think about a question is appropriate. You may also offer opinions on the meaning of any specific answer.

This is a good idea, but this is being discussed in Moose's topic.

Buz, in a nother thread posted the following:
In answer to a question of bias:1. Several questions on page one seemed to implicate the Bush Admin foreign affairs in the Middleast. 2. Question one assumes and insinuates that trans-national private enterprise corporations do not serve humanity. 3. In ques 2 no matter how I answer, it portrays me as supporting either all or none of my country's policies. 4. 3 has nobody choosing country of birth and insinuates national pride to be foolish. 5. 4 casts a bad racist shadow on any who would recognize superior qualities of their respective races. For example, for blacks to recognize the known and statistical fact that their athletic abilities in such sports as boxing are superior to most other races, due to their natural physiology. The same would apply to American Indians who seem to excell all others as steeplejacks, Arabs and American Indians as rug weavers and so forth. 6. 5's problem is that the question is too relative a question for a yes or no answer. and then in answer to: Could you explain how you judged this, and why you felt one page was as good as the rest when each page had different topics and what appeared to be styles of question? The survey would not let you view past page one without filling out page one. My comments follow: 1) I see no mention of the current administration or any specific war. You are allowed to strongly disagree with anyone of the statments. How is that biased? 2) That is a good point about the question. It isn't necessarily an either or. However, if there is any conflict between the two the question is asking you which you would pick I think. And you aren't saying there isn't ever any conflict are you?? 3) That is the point of question 2. Do you or do you not ever disagree with any of your countries policies. If you never, ever do then you answer on one extreme. If you are always prepared to on a case by case basis you answer the other extreme. I don't see a "bias" for one answer here. 4) question 3 allows you to strongly disagree with the statment. It doesn't tell you what to pick. 5) I agree it could be worded better. It doesn't say, however, what you think. It, to me, says that agreeing with it is saying that the answerer's race has more superior characteristics not just different tones. 6) You are right but it does allow for some gradiation of answer. These kinds of things don't have to have every question right on just enough to get an approximate view. and then, why not click a bunch of answers to see what is on the next page. It doesn't matter a darn. It is an amusing game and might give on some insite into your own views and those of others. It is not big deal. This message has been edited by NosyNed, 08-30-2004 02:00 PM

1. Some of the questions are slanted Most of them are slanted ! Some right-wingers accuse us of a leftward slant. Some left-wingers accuse us of a rightward slant. But it's important to realise that this isn't a survey, and these aren't questions. They're propositions - an altogether different proposition. To question the logic of individual ones that irritate you is to miss the point. Some propositions are extreme, and some are more moderate. That's how we can show you whether you lean towards extremism or moderation on the Compass. Some of the propositions are intentionally vague. Their purpose is to trigger buzzwords in the mind of the user, measuring feelings and prejudices rather than detailed opinions on policy. Incidentally, our test is not another internet personality classification tool. The essence of our site is the model for political analysis. The test is simply a demonstration of it. 9. In some cases none of the four possible responses reflected my attitude One expert in the field suggested that we restrict the responses to simply 'agree' and 'disagree'. But how many do you need? Ten? Twenty? If you choose the one that most nearly reflects your feeling, you'll get an accurate reading...even if it niggles. 10. You should have a "don't know" option This makes it too easy for people to duck difficult issues. By forcing people to take a positive or negative stance, the propositions make people really evaluate their feelings. Often people find they wanted to select 'don't know' mainly because they'd never really thought about the idea. Good saves me some work. It looks like I'm the fascist here so far.
The colour don't work and I don't think we should plot the people so much as the groups.

Buz replied to me in an another thread...
1. 5. 4 casts a bad racist shadow on any who would recognize superior qualities of their respective races... I think you are reading into these statements a derision or added meaning which is not there. They are strong statements which can bring up certain references to any person's mind, but it is up to you to support them or not. There is no implication you are bad for having chosen whichever you have. I am puzzled how you believe anyone chooses their place of birth?
6. 5's problem is that the question is too relative a question for a yes or no answer. I felt this was a problem with a lot of the questions and which is why I didn't think it was necessarily accurate. I felt there wer several which were not just too relative, but could simply be taken to mean several different things. In the end I think it indicated I was less libertarian than I actually am. Why not take the test (it's only a couple of minutes) and see what it says and then compile different criticisms of why you didn't think it capture what you are, if it turns out different than you see yourself.
The survey would not let you view past page one without filling out page one. Ya know you can just fill it out to see what is next? I actually ran through it a couple different times using the different responses to the ambiguous questions I had problems with. Surprisingly I kept ending up in about the same area (I noted the range of scores in my post, rather than one single set). I have stated that this test did not feel completely accurate.
I thought some of the questions were too vague, or could be interpreted in different ways, as well as some needing something more than just agree/disagree. I mean what about I don't know/don't care. In the end I don't think it reflected my actual libertarian social position. Was anyone else finding faults with the test? Any thoughts on improvement? holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Bros) |
