If you would like to engage in a one on one debate all you have to do is request it. Simply propose a topic and ask that it be a Great Debate between you and whoever the other participant will be.

Please pass this information on to MrHambre. I am sure he will be pleased. He can then contact me and inform me of where the thread he opens for our one on one debate is located. Thanks.
The theory of evolution is a viable theory, absent the myth of macroevolution.
Once the myth of macroevolution is included, the viability of the theory of evolution vanishes as it slowly evolves into just another example of an implausible story, nestled amongst the numerous fairytale's of our youth.-----DarkStar

It hasn't been set up yet. I think we'll let Percy do that once both sides have made clear what is actually being debated.

I haven't seen anything from DarkStar, but if he and MrHambre would like a moderated debate then they can start as soon as they're ready. One of them should start the debate by posting a message in [forum=-25] clearly describing what is being asserted so that the two opposing positions are carefully delineated, and then making the case for his side. As soon as one of the moderators approves it, it can be moved to [forum=-8].
I recommend two moderators, JazzLover and someone else. --Percy

quote: Incorrect. You will note that bencip19's post is #299 in the thread. He asked me a direct question but the thread had been closed. Rather than reopen it just for a single post, I decided to post it in a separate thread. He hasn't deigned to respond, so I'm not asking for it to be reopened. I'm just pointing out that I'm not stupid. I know how the board works. I handily admit that I probably should have provided a link back to bencip19's post, but I was pretty sure that he would remember what it was he asked of me. It was, after all, his question. It sure looked like a misplaced message to me.
The topic can be reopened, but my guess is that the points have since been covered in the "What will become of marriage?" topic. Adminnemooseus

Adminemooseus closed the thread ostensibly about dinos inthe bible though there are a number of important spin-off ideas that are well worth exploring.
With a flurry of posts all within an hour, occasioned by the one off-topic post and the thread was closed by Adminemooseus, who said, rather unperceptively, "I am going to take the wild guess that this topic is terminally off-topic, and/or has been resolved as best it is going to be." Not a very perspicacious decision, given that the problem he was complaining about was in fact less than an hour old when he terminated it. Retrojecting modern science's ideas about dinosaurs into the Hebrew bible is certainly misguided, but the evidence used to claim the right to do so is certainly interesting in itself, because we can see a common event when confronting biblical analysis, ie the reinterpretation of motifs when the original function is lost. It is better to deal with those motifs to discover their real content rather than stifling the thread because the moderation wasn't keeping the thread on course. Hey, folks, you're supposed to hack off thread derailments not close the thread. Can this thread be fixed up and reopened please?

Hey, folks, you're supposed to hack off thread derailments not close the thread There is little that can be done other than point out when posts are moving off topic. We do not generally censor any posts except spam. It was getting redundant though as well as drifting way over the place. If you would like to propose a continuation thread then we can give it another try. Comments on moderation procedures (or wish to respond to admin messages)? - Go to: Change in Moderation? (General discussion of moderation procedures) or Thread Reopen Requests or Considerations of topic promotions from the "Proposed New Topics" forum or Introducing the new "Boot Camp" forum

There is no talk of censoring a thread. If posts go off topic, they can be hacked off and put in a new thread. That way you get rid of the derailment allowing those who want to continue the thread to do so, and those interested in the derailment can continue that if desired.
Understanding the background, usage and implications of the numerous biblical terms such as tehom, tannym, rahab, leviathan, behemoth, etc., is useful for when people want to misuse them in the future, as in the case of those who want to make dinosaurs out of them.

The topic closing message.
I'm not up to getting into a long discussion of this matter. Yes, my moderation efforts sometimes rely on instinct. What I will say, is that topic closure (temporary or permanent) is the only sure way of topic drift (or derailment) control. As the topic had gone already gone 200 plus messages, I thought it probably had run its productive course. Thus I was strongly leaning towards permanent closure. It would be most helpful if the more experienced members would not give long responses to off-topic material. Topic drift control needs the input (or maybe it's sometimes the non-input) of all the participants. Well, there you have it. Another wishy-washy Adminnemooseus message. I suggest you propose a successor topic, to pick up where the previous one was still going good. Of course, still open to further feedback, Adminnemooseus ps:

Um, why exactly did we close down my topic? Fine, we got away from the title a bit, but I still wanted to discuss the topic we were on. Or is religious discussion not encouraged on this Forum?

You and all took the topic off into Biblical inerrency. There are, as noted, threads for that.
When a topic goes way off course and no one is paying attention it is sometimes necessary to close it to emphasize to all parties that they have to apply some discipline. There are places for the religious discussion and in particular Biblical inerrancy. If you understand this I would be prepared to re-open the dinosaurs thread.
