Re: What is biology class for?

How are you going to teach critical thinking in a paradigm of "I'm the teacher, I have the facts, take notes while I tell them to you?" The purpose of education is the dissemination of fact and training in techniques of math, art, and scholarship. Critical thinking? I don't see how it can be taught, it's self-defeating. If you teach somebody that critical thinking means not taking someone's word for something, and then you proceed to expect your students to take your word on the fact that ID is wrong, what do you expect that you're going to get?
Uh, I was taught critical thinking in a classroom context.
The course title was "The Nature of Scientific Inquiry."

Re: Critical Thinking?
quote:
It seems that "Critical thinking" is being equated with skepticism, doubt, or disrespect.
"Critical thinking" most certainly equals "skepticism and doubt".
It doesn't involve lack of respect of anything, however.
quote:
Teaching the proper methods for interpretation of empirical evidence would help. What to look for in a research report or presentation that indicates that the scientific method (for want of a better phrase) has been followed.
Have you ever been in a room when a bunch of scientists are discussing a not-great paper in their field of expertise?
There is always skepticism and doubt as they evaluate the paper.

Re: What is biology class for?

You might have been taught techniques of empiricism, but did you really not know how to approach information or instruction critically before you took a class on it?
Well, I it was a process.
I used to "kind of" belive in all sorts of things when I was young, and definitely believed in God until my mid twenties or so, but the course I took certainly helped organize my thoughts and introduced me to many ways of thinking about claims that I had never known about before.

I am not sure what your comment had to do with this comment. Please explain.

no controversy no grant money.
Well, no. I would correct the above to say, "no unanswered scientific question with a good chance of yielding fruitful results", no grant money.
quote:
same aspect applies to the other side.
Creationists are getting grant money to perform scientific research? Where? Who? When?

Re: but teach it with all its prolems, errors and miss-representations.
quote:
Of course creationism should be taught in the classroom. People who are interested in what's true or false want to hear any theory. But those who are afraid of certain theories call the truth a "religion". Therefore classrom children can never hear the truth and make up their own minds. teaching only one theory about the creation of the world is called brainwashing, especially when no one was around to document this theory.
I agree.
Which creation stories should we teach?

Re: Thank you all...

the problem is that in the american school system, from first grade we learn the same thing every year. we never have to actually learn it because we'll just review it next year.
i was taking an honors english class senior year of high school and we had to go over sentence structure and commas because these tards were too stupid to figure it out.
Did they have to go over capitalising the first words of sentences, too?
Seriously, that shows the enormous range of quality of US public high schools. My honor's English class did nothing of the sort, and I don't remember being taught that in class past 6th grade.

Re: How Old is Schrafinator?

How old are you and where did you go to school?
I am turning 38 this year, and I went to High School here.
I'd also like to say that this was not a particularly rich school district, nor was it in a very sophisticated town or county (not at all). The level of higher education among the general populace was not that high; there's still quite a lot of blue-collar work in that area.

Re: What is biology class for?

I think you replied to the wrong person . this has nothing to do with any of my posts
Actually, your reply to me (which I then replied to) is message #46 in this thread.
If you look at the bottom of the message window for a given post, you will see a listing of all of the message numbers of the replies, along with the authors' names.
You can click on the message numbers to go to those individual replies. In this way it is possible to follow an exchange back to where it began within a thread.
I think that you may have thought you were replying to someone else when you initially replied to me.
One way to avoid this confusion is to quote at least part of the message you are responding to in the body of your reply.
To see how to use the quote boxes, use the "peek mode", which you will find in the lower right corner of the message boxes.
