Why not use your influence to persuade the powers that be here at EvC to invite the two self-appointed, self annointed, "experts" representing the opposing factions in this ongoing debate to join in the "showcase" venue where they too may "sell their products" as I am doing. They would be, as it seems to me, William Dembski and Richard Dawkins. Being an experimental scientist at heart I am willing right now to predict the outcome of this experiment which is all the more reason to perform it. Neither will respond just as they didn't when I offered them the same opportunity. If they should respond it certainly would be "fun" as you put it wouldn't it? Either way I will win and they will lose! Trust me. John, this thread is NOT a discussion thread. Do NOT reply to this message here. Any comments may be taken to the Suggestion Forum or to Message 1. Forum: Social issues and creation/evolution Thread: The problem with Science II Message: 172 crashfrog makes an excellent point illustrating how many in the fundamentalist community tend to consider their own random musings and personal beliefs as equivalent to the knowledge of scientists who dedicate their lives to the study of specific topics. Concepts like "common knowledge" , "feeling it is right" or principles based on personal anecdotes are exactly what science avoids and is the reason science is the most successful of human endeavors...too bad about 90% of the US population does not realize this. But gratifying to see crashfrog express this point so well. Edited by Mammuthus, : No reason given. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Made the "172" a link.

IK asks why, if science must consider the unevidenced designer (UD), other areas of investigation such as forensicists (I know -- I made it up), doctors, accident investigators and the like should not be expected to do the same. This would I think lead to there being "resonable" doubt in all murder cases. This next step in reasoning should have been in the post to finish it off. Edited by AdminNWR, : fixed link

I've done this as a reply to Parasomnium to keep the title intact.
I second the nomination, not only for the post, but for the courage he has shown in dealing with these issues. He's faced the difficulties, he's wrestled with the difficulties and whether you agree with his conclusions or not, you have to acknowledge that he's been very honest in his thoughts and in his post. So it's not only a nomination for post of the month, but poster of the month as well.

I may be too EvC virginal to know if the film analogy hasn't been done before, but its the first time I've seen it and I think it's great. That's what struck me the most but the whole post is excellent IMHO. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : Added the "(at "Nested Biological Hierarchies" topic)" part to the subtitle. Doing such gives some useful information at this POTM topic's index page.

Seconded.
And to think he only added it later... Modulous usually writes pretty good stuff.

anglagard: Thanks for that - I've not seen the film metaphor used, and basically made it up as I went along (my university life was all about the electronic engineering behind media such as film and television so it was kind of intuitive to me). I remember my physics teacher impressing on me the magnitude of even a 'small' big number like a million in similar terms.
SuperNintendo: a belated thanks! I hope that others also enjoyed reading many of the good posts being written in that thread! edit: and thanks Para! *glows in a self-satisfied manner* Edited by Modulous, : No reason given. Edited by Modulous, : No reason given.

Wow. I had to go to page three to find June POMs. Has June been that dull? Anyhow, leave it to Ringo to liven things up with his witty gems. This response to Iano is a dandy!

A new way of looking at how the hierarchies might be developed and then classified. I think it would have been better if he used actual color choices -- just to make it more concrete (red, green, blue etc.) Why is it premature? It hasn't shown that the biological hierarchies are of the same sort. That is, explicitely show they behave like the card example.
