Sounds like you lived in or near the Bay Area or perhaps listen to an SF radio station. I got so sick of that commercial while I was there. Always the same. Years on end. No innovation. So I had to laugh, imagining what a hell it would be to have to listen to the ad playing over and over, while eating the product for all eternity. ... an afterlife-time supply of Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat. db

I technically am a "native Californian"...I just haven't lived here very long (it'll be 9 years in San Diego in a few weeks...the longest I've lived in a single city in my life...though I have moved twice since I got here. I was a New Mexico resident for 11 years, but that was interrupted by college where I often didn't go home for the summer.) I'm simply old enough to remember the golden age of TV game shows like Match Game where Rice-a-Roni was the consolation prize. ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

I'm not trying to pick on specific individuals here, but the previous seems to be representitive of what seems to happening too much lately.
I suggest that the off-topic chit-chat be taken somewhere else. A while back, we were facing a server space storage (potential) crisis. At that time, I created the "Short Term Topics and Messages" forum, to be a place for material that didn't call for long term retention. That forum might be the place for the chit-chat. The storage space problem is not currently pressing, so I haven't been deleting the "Short Term" topics. BZZT? Is that your summation on each discussion? Mighty childish if you ask me. At least when I talk about your impending doom it is backed up by a reference. Yours is just conjecture and a faint attempt at humor.
I've never talked to Homer but I'm sure he used places that were in existence in his sotries just as Stephen King and John Grisham do today. Being good writers, they know that this lends a sense of reality to their creations. I have answered your questions as I see fit but you fail to accept my explanations. Maybe I should shake the dust from my feet and move on.

Mr. Administrator. Is foul language and profanity acceptable in this forum? I thought it was to be an intelligent discussion group. Use of profanity lacks intelligence, not to mention a limited vocabulary.

And I seriously doubt that you've ever talked to Moses, Paul, or John, or to the anonymous authors that wrote the books attributed to them, either. I'm sure that Gibeon and the valley of Ajalon are just as real as the plains of Troy, but what is there about the book of Joshua that makes the story of the Sun and Moon standing still in those places any more believable than Ares appearing at Troy? Shiprock really is still there, west of Farmington, New Mexico. Is it any less believable that it was once a huge bird than that JHWH created the universe in six days?I think not. Edit to add, after seeing your last post: Theo, if it was my vulgarity the other day that bothered you, I apologize, and I'll restrain myself in the future. Cora,
I used to live in Farmington so I know of shiprock very well. As for it being a bird, that's a BIG bird AND a BIG story. It's Indian folklore. Did someone write about seeing the big bird? Are there pictures of it anywhere? At least Judges records the actions and experiences of Gideon. Your argument holds not water. Sorry.

Believing in God's creation or that JOSHUA (not Gideon) could stop the sun takes faith. THAT'S how we can accept these stories. It takes more faith to believe we can from lower life forms than from a Creator. Evolution has over 10,000 missing links to make it feasible.
There's evidence that Darwin recanted of his thoeries on his death bed. Jack Chick has the tract at his website.

Please don't bring up Jack Chick. It will make me lapse into much worse than vulgarity. The Lady Hope story is, according to the creationist website Answers in Genesis, a fabrication. http://www.answersingenesis.org/docs/1315.asp

Posting quotes and all such is in the "UBB quick ref" tab under "Forums Help" at the top of any page. {qs}quote{/qs}, but using square brackets instead of curly ones, is easiest.

While replying to a message, look to the left of the text box. There, you will see "*UBB code is ON." Click on that phrase and you will be taken to page explaining the quote functions, as well as other things.

Use of profanity lacks intelligence, not to mention a limited vocabulary. You're going to have to point me at the "foul language and profanity" - wasn't able to find it. When you register you agree not to post anything that is "knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law." Whew! What a list! While I think the list is generally good, I don't think it's possible to arrive at objective assessments of "vulgar", "obscene" and "profane." The Supreme Court here in the states has essentially said the same thing. Personally, for most of my life I didn't use obscene language, though I encountered it all the time, and I felt better about myself for it. But as I grew older the silly, petty "better morality than you" of it began to become apparent, and I began to realize that the expressiveness of obscenity was not readily duplicated with non-obscene synonyms. And at some point it struck me that my abilities as a communicator were suffering because I was cutting myself off needlessly from an entire realm of expression. I still make little use of obscene language or references, I mostly don't feel comfortable with them, but now, when the context fits, I not only use them, I embrace them. So I guess my position would be that as long as points relevant to the discussion are being made that aren't hateful, harassing, etc, that there isn't much language I would have a problem with. ------------------
