Topic: Hypocrisy at funerals

For me personally, it hammered home the reality that any thought of an afterlife is simply there as a consolation factor. Is there anything wrong with consoling the sorrowful?
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

If what they were saying is actually what they believe to be true, where is the hypocrisy?

Okay, and I certainly understand you feel that way but was it really hypocrisy?

I suppose what it appears to me is that EVERYONE goes to heaven when it comes down to it, thus negating any necessity for doing any good or having any morals, which is what the christians (for the most part) claim to have: moral superiority. If there is no real fear of damnation, why the need for any salvation? Oh, to pretend to feel good about something, right? Quite honestly no one has a clue who will be saved and who will not. In addition, people have the capacity to forgive even very great wrongs. Is it unreasonable to think a god might be at least as forgiving as humans? Even you seem to have cared enough about this person to have attended his funeral. But still, where is the hypocrisy?

Not really. I cannot guess what the person was taught but I still see no hypocrisy. Not sure why a baby raping cannibal shouldn't go to heaven. The point is, if they believe that the person is in heaven or even hope that the person was forgiven ad is in heaven, where is the hypocrisy?

Oh, the same guy who supposedly punished all of humanity for one bitch eating an apple? Yea, that guy is real forgiving all right. We aren't talking about "a" god here. These people were christians, so they were not speaking of "a" god. They were talking about jesus himself and his daddy YHWH (if there is a difference). Yes, I don't doubt that is what you believe but so far the only hypocrisy I find in the story is YOUR behavior.

The others went to the funeral because they believe or hope that the person is forgiven by God. There is no hypocrisy in their behavior. However you went and participated even though you do NOT believe in what the service was about or even seem to hope that the person is forgiven and in a better place. That is hypocritical. They may well be inconsistent, wrong, deluded about the subject but none of those rises to the level of hypocrisy.

Again, even if that were true, it is irrelevant to this topic. The issue is "Hypocrisy at funerals". BUT, almost all Christian groups recognize that salvation is a function of God's Grace. Nothing in there precludes forgiveness.

The hypocrisy is at the religious level, in that, as Huntard pointed out, the religious (christians for the sake of this discussion) claim moral superiority due to their salvation. Again, that is still not hypocrisy.

I'm saying that none of the believers at the funeral were being hypocritical. They may well be inconsistent, incorrect, inept, even illogical, but none of those rise to hypocrisy. They are following through on their personal hopes and beliefs. The problem is that you set the topic as "Hypocrisy at funerals" and so far have not presented many examples that fit that topic except your participation in the funeral. If you had made the topic "hooah212002s hypocrisy at a funeral" then it would have been both relevant and accurate. I also think it would be perfectly correct behavior and the right thing to do.

When the wife shows you her latest dress it does flatter her and always looks good. Period. When you have a child your child is the most wonderful child ever. Period. You will always love your child even when you want to wring their neck. Period. Life is often filled with hypocrisy of convenience or kindness.
