Well, since I don't think that advertising is bad in and of itself, preaching in and of itself cannot be bad in my mind. However, there are channels available for such activity and going outside those channels is, at the very least, rude.
And, as most people have figured, exploiting the suffering of someone as a wedge to do so is evil.

But street preachers really piss me off.
My attitude is the exact opposite. They shouldn't be knocking on my door. That is my door and they need my permission to go knocking on it or have some really good reason for doing so...and no, preaching is not a really good reason.
But idiots screaming in the public square is their right. Public areas are where people get to say what they want.
Now, to crash's question about private property, that depends upon the institution. My undergrad was a private college so they would be quickly escorted out, but my graduate university was a public college and I routinely had fun debating the preacher and showing him that I knew the Bible better than he did.

sidelined,
Well, there is at least one thing that can be done by a homeowner: Simply put up a sign that says "No solicitors." It's sad that one needs to point out violations of etiquette, but this is such a minor thing that it isn't very significant.
Me? I happen to live in a gated community...I never answer the door unless I'm expecting someone since you're not supposed to be able to get into the complex without a reason.
I don't think there is a good parallel between the phone and the door. For some stupid reason, the phone companies have decided to charge people to set up their service to block callers who refuse to identify themselves.
And unlike telephone calls which can originate from anywhere, a person has to physically come to your door.
