The humor (plus a giant mug of coffee) helped motivate the disentanglement, and it proved to be "moderate" in mess and hassle, so the speakers are now working again. Does the resultant relief, peace and calm count as enlightenment?
I really didn't want to call up my nephew, who is in fact a great- nephew (in both senses of the term), who lives thirty miles away, so I'm glad I didn't have to. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

a is the area you have to work within given in cm3 Why is a, the area, given in units of volume?Inversely proportional to the square of the volume?? Do you have a back-of-the-envelope derivation of that??? Innarestin'.- xongsmith, 5.7d

Why is a, the area, given in units of volume? Actually it should be space rather than area, which of course is multidimensional as we are dealing with string theory derivations. by our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. In actuality area was used as a ... well... oops. On the internet, you are only wrong when you give up. "In actuality, area was used as a proxy for volume because the most important quantity is the depth and width of access for your finger tips. The remaining dimension is of lesser importance" Or some such face saving remark... Then throw in some more BS math and voila. You are right again! I'm so sick of this damn ClearType business.
What the hell is the point of it? It's the worst possible solution for something that was never a problem. But anyway, now I need to get ClearType completely out of IE9, but at work. The IT folks there don't seem to know what I'm even talking about, so I guess I'll be solving this on my own. I've seen solutions about downloading .dlls and editing registry values, but those fixes aren't possible on my work computer . Interestingly, I managed to turn off font smoothing for the most part by disabling some visual effects. Now there is no smoothing on the desktop or in certain parts of certain documentsand some fonts in IE9 now render without CT, but the majority are still blurry as hell; most Word fonts are also fine, but headings for some reason are still blurry, though I can live with that; taskbar buttons are also blurry, but I use IE9 the most so that's the place I really need a full fix. So my question is how to get this nastiness to disappear for good. I have read about possibly using CSS and then setting IE9 to use a default CSS through the Accessibility options, but I would have no idea where to begin with that, and I don't want to completely remove all the visual effects (like buttons and boxes, shading, etc.) by putting in a bad CSS. It's Win7 and IE9. I appreciate any help! Love your enemies! |

Moving this here because it was off topic where I first brought it up. I think I'm just about to solve this problem but thought it might be a good idea to run it by the technologically savvy people here first anyway.
Here's the series of off-topic posts starting from Message 197 for orientation:
I said: I'm up to my ears in a really messy furniture moving project that has disrupted my whole computer area. Thanks to the internet guy who says I have to get to a phone jack I haven't seen in ten years because it's behind a heavy bookcase with a lot of stuff in front of it. I've made progress but it's going to take help at some point. RAZD asked: Are you getting DSL or FIOS instead of cable? Hopefully not dial-up (although that has gotten faster as everyone else moves to cable & DSL) I answered: It's DSL, and the previous was DSL. Or so I thought. I don't understand why I have to get to the phone jack. He says I have to remove the white cord and stick it in the back of the new modem. JonF responded: DSL goes over your phone line, so it does need to be connected to the phone line.Typically any phone plugged into that line has to have a filter between it and the wall jack so only the modem sees the DSL stuff. To clarify: The internet is functioning, but I don't have a phone until I switch this cord. (This was something AT&T contacted me about, saying I need this upgrade because there is too much internet traffic in my neighborhood. They knocked off $30 for the first year so that's a plus. Far as I can tell there is no improvement in the internet speed, however, and I would like to have my phone back.) I can almost reach behind the bookcase now, but I keep being afraid of doing something wrong because I don't really understand why I have to take this cord out of the jack and put it in the back of the modem. I only see one cord back there and I'd expected to see two. If I unhook the one there will be no cords going to the jack, which doesn't make sense if it all comes through the phone line. But my eyes are bad enough that I don't know for sure that there's only one cord there. This MAY be the answer: Since the jack was unreachable the internet guy hooked something up outside. He was gone quite a while, said they'd given him the wrong "port." I had no idea what he was doing but I'm guessing now that he was hooking me up to the phone line outside, which MAY mean the phone jack is irrelevant and I should just move the phone cord as instructed, which probably is the only cord back there. Opinions? Advice? Thanks.

Is your phone plugged into that jack? Can you not just get a new cord and plug it into the modem and into your phone? The internet technician told me I had to remove the white cord from the jack and put it in the back of the modem. I probably shouldn't question the guy at all but if I do something wrong it's a major hassle for me. Getting a new cord, ha ha. I don't go anywhere these days. The only help I have is my poor brother who has to drive forty miles to get here. He'd have to get the cord for me and he doesn't get down here that often. We'd have to be very sure that's the solution.

It sounds to me, then, like she'd have nothing connected to the phone line.

I had gotten DSL over 15 years ago and for the past 11 years I've been working with a cable modem plugged into a wireless router. As such, I am undoubtedly the least likely helpful person.
However, what we have as the source for all our information is a person who is not tech-savvy (and I do mean that in the most non-blaming non-judgemental manner that could ever be possible). I cannot feel but that we do not have the whole picture here. It seems to me that we eventually need to have something plugged into that wall jack. But it keeps sounding to me that we are removing what is currently plugged into there and plugging it into something else. Which would leave us with nothing plugged into that wall jack. That leaves me confused. Much more confused than is normal. The archetypical New Englander remark is, "Ye can't get the'a from he'a." (please apply the accent you have heard oh so many times). Well, we know neither "he'a" nor "the'a", so how can we figure out the transition? First, we need to determine what the final configuration needs to be. In one software design class, the process was described as first specifying what the outputs had to be, then determining what the inputs needed to be to produce those outputs, followed by determining how we needed to process the inputs so that we could get the specified outputs. Faith, what is the final configuration that you will need? What is the initial configuration that you already have? From those, you can then work out a step-by-step procedure for getting from he'a to the'a. You may very well need more hand-holding from your service provider (AKA "the internet technician"). Or you may be better off hiring it out to your service provider or to whomever. To everybody else, please chime in as to whether I'm steering her right or wrong. I did grievously wrong her very recently, so I'd rather not add to my karmic load.
