I have enjoyed reading the various post on this site that I find both interesting and informative, I have noticed that some of the posters like to quote. So I thought it would be cool to jot down your favorite quote and a brief explaination why you like it.
Heres one of mine: "Two things are infinte the universe and human stupidity and I am not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein I like this quote because it sort of humbles the reader a little and also because I can be a smart ass. Lets here yours group!

Quoth the Raven,
A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author.=G. K. Chesterton
As you all know, I like the Bible. Written by human authors inspired by the Holy Spirit, this book tells us of the hero...Jesus Christ!

Here's mine:
"I have gone out to look for myself. If I should return before I get back, hold me until I get here. Thank you." Anonymous
This was given to me years ago when I was trying to be the good: mom, wife, daughter, neighbor, employee, and try to keep some sense of identity all at the same time.... It worked. The job had to go.

Here's my favorite relevant one.
The moral was pointed out over and over again that "there are some things Man was not meant to know."
Even as a youngster, though, I could not bring myself to believe that if knowledge presented danger, the solution was ignorance. To me, it always seemed that the solution had to be wisdom. You did not refuse to look at danger, rather you learned how to handle it safely.
-Isaac Asimov, introduction to The Caves of Steel
I don't use it in my sig because it would be horribly unfair to scroll through it every time I post.

In Hamlet, Polonious says:
quote:
Brevity is the soul of wit.
This is so often quoted that people sometimes come to this play expecting Polonious to be wise and prophetic. He is anything but, and this quote, in context, is a great example of linguistic irony.
To my mind, some of the greatest quotes ever (outside of Shakespeare, of course) come from Winston Churchill. Here is a small sampling:
quote:
If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favourable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.
The English never draw a line without blurring it.
A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.
In a reference to political rival Clement Atlee:
quote:
He is a modest little man who has a good deal to be modest about.
Here's one I can't find at the moment, so I may not get the precise wording correct. When a liberal reporter commented (I think it was at the Potsdam conference, but I could be wrong) "Mr. Churchill, you're drunk", the response was:
quote:
Yes, madam, and you're ugly. The difference is that tomorrow morning I'll be sober!
Regardless of your politics, you gotta love this guy.

Sir Winston spits game
Here are some more quotations which were attributed to Sir Winston Churchill. I will agree with berberry. The Bulldog sure knew how to spit game!

And now for something completely different . . .
Monty Python's satirical exchange between James Whistler and Oscar Wilde:
WHISTLER: "There is only one thing in the world worse than being witty, and that is not being witty."
WILDE: "I wish I had said that Whistler."
WHISTLER: "Oh, you will, Oscar, you will."
Monty Python's Flying Circus, Oscar Wilde sketch.
The Players:
Terry Jones - The Prince Of Wales;
Graham Chapman - Oscar Wilde;
John Cleese - James McNeill Whistler;
Michael Palin - George Bernard Shaw;

If you were my husband, I'd give you poison.
Was it Churchill who replied, "Madam, if I were your husband, I'd drink it!"
