Desperate. Six people have been trying all day to remember the name of a small restaurant that existed in the middle 70s along the Cabrillo highway between Santa Cruz and Watsonville, California. It wasn't anything special, more like a Denny's than anything else but it wasn't a franchise. It was the natural place to stop if you were going anywhere on that highway.
Friends who lived in that area at the time think they remember it by later names, such as "Cindy's" and the Boston Market, but can't remember an earlier business there. Not totally sure they are remembering the same place but they claim there's nothing else in the area that fits the description.
We've found the website Departed Businesses in that area but Cindy's is the earliest name at that particular location -- IF we are even remembering the right location.
Driving us crazy. Desperate enough to ask at EvC if anyone knows the area.

Never been in that area, but may I suggest that you look for old telephone directories from that time?
I have used the ones on ancestry.com to find my parents' address in 1942 and various family members' addresses in the late 1940's and early 1950's. Of course, if you don't already have an account there, that may not help, but other sites may have them. Public and university libraries could be another place you could find them; most libraries allow you to search their card catalog on-line. Business directories should also exist and should be sought -- the dead-end you mentioned sounded like somebody's compilation of data instead of the actual source material directory.
Newspapers! Perusing through the local newspaper of that time period could find advertising for that restaurant.
You could even try to find an article announcing the opening of Cindy's where they may mention that that building used to be ____ .

Try also looking up local historical societies.
They are good at answering that kind of question.
