Could be.
Right, though, barrier islands are ephemeral. And some of them are mobile Which makes them wonderful national resources to enjoy in good weather, in their natural wildness prefereably (imho), but lousy places to build homes and businesses. I give them 5 years by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

CNN\Netscape News - Refiners Applying Katrina Lessons to Rita (click)
"We are about two or three days ahead of where we were with Katrina," said Mary Rose Brown, spokeswoman for San Antonio-based Valero. "RVs are rented and ready to go; trucks are packed and ready; we have generators ready; and we've sent refinery managers cash that way we can get it to employees affected," she said. If anyone needs confirmation that the botch administration is incompetent, this is it.
From the link:
CBS News correspondent Gloria Borger reports that Michael Brown, who recently resigned as the head of the FEMA, has been rehired by the agency as a consultant to evaluate it's response following Hurricane Katrina. So we are going to have someone who was too incompetent to know what to do, study what went wrong? Is this where he gets his medal? by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

like scum in a polluted pond I was going for a "toilet bowl" reference, myself. When Brown left the first time I think it was a blogger or something who said it best: "Bush squeezes out a Brownie."

This just in:
"It was everybody's fault but mine" -- Brownie FROM: Former FEMA Head Blames Others for Hurricane Response Problems (click) Former FEMA Director Michael Brown today blamed much of what went wrong with the government's response to Hurricane Katrina on Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, telling a House committee that the key elected officials were "dysfunctional" as the hurricane bore down on New Orleans. In stark contrast to his performance. AND: FROM: Brown Shifts Blame for Katrina Response (click) Brown also said that in the days before the storm, he expressed his concerns that ``this is going to be a bad one'' in phone conversations and e-mails with President Bush, White House chief of staff Andy Card and deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin. And he blamed the Department of Homeland Security - the parent agency for the Federal Emergency Management Agency - for not acquiring better equipment ahead of the storm. Let's see that's everyone below and everyone above ... think anyone noticed?
"I'm happy you left," said Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn. "That kind of look in the lights like a deer tells me you weren't capable of doing that job." Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., told Brown: "The disconnect was, people thought there was some federal expertise out there. There wasn't. Not from you." So, somebody tell me again ... why was this guy hired as a consultant to look into the mistakes in handling these siturations? Is their thinking really just so incompetent that they don't see it? btw: Gene Taylor, good man, also lives in Pascagoula (I did shake his hand when I lived there), but we didn't hear about his house ... perhaps because he lives in a more protected area? Enjoy. by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

All that is now smoke and mirrors: keep your eye on the money. No-bid contracts worth hundred of millions, and, soon, billions, have already been awarded to Republican cronies' companies, the same companies that cannot keep the lights on in Iraq. Environmental regulations have been waived; prevailing wage laws have been suspended, though one would think that nothing could help the devastated working class in that region more than decent wages. Lessee, this will help: we'll extra-pollute you and cut your wages, okay? Brownie was in the Club, so Brownie's fall has to be cushioned. The notion of employing Brownie to suss out what went wrong smacks of Karl Rove's deviant mind: brilliant, in a sleazy kinda way. Hundreds of mercenaries, U.S., Israeli, etc., employees of the same "security firms" that are fattening on Iraq, were among the first armed responders in NO. Private thugs, armed with automatic weapons, cruising the streets of a devastated American city in black SUVs without plates. Does that picture bother you? It depresses me and meets my expectations. Bush offers a thousand NO refugees a chance to homestead on federal lands in the NO area, but there are tens of thousands of apartments/condos sitting empty in NO because rent levels were down, and landlords preferred boarding up to renting down. Prediction: New Orleans will become a right-wing social experiment. Most of the impoverished residents will never return. Here is an irresistible chance to change the color of that colorful city.

Just to show you that you haven`t cornered the market.
A certain town council north of here decided to do major cost-cutting and fired their chief engineer. Things got in a tangle quickly so they re-hired him as a full-time consultant------at twice his previous salary. |

and people are beginning to look at the money trail.
Conservatives (the real kind) are beginning to question where it is going with so little effect. People can tend to ignore the dissappearance of large sums of money in the Iraq Inversion, because they are not familiar with the day to day operations over there (and most don't want to know) But when it is here at home, suddenly it becomes apparent that we are not getting value for money. Then they begin to look at the bigger picture. Only 400 turned out for a pro-bush ralley to counter the sheehan peace ralley in DC ... that's 400/297,291,184 = 0.00013% by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist

Time for all of the Iraq war supporters to put up or shut up.
Bush plea for cash to rebuild Iraq raises $600
Mark Townsend in HoustonSunday September 25, 2005 The Observer An extraordinary appeal to Americans from the Bush administration for money to help pay for the reconstruction of Iraq has raised only $600 (337), The Observer has learnt. Yet since the appeal was launched earlier this month, donations to rebuild New Orleans have attracted hundreds of millions of dollars. The public's reluctance to contribute much more than the cost of two iPods to the administration's attempt to offer citizens 'a further stake in building a free and prosperous Iraq' has been seized on by critics as evidence of growing ambivalence over that country. This coincides with concern over the increasing cost of the war. More than $30 billion has been appropriated for the reconstruction. Initially, America's overseas aid agency, USaid, expected it to cost taxpayers no more than $1.7bn, but it is now asking the public if they want to contribute even more. It is understood to be the first time that a US government has made an appeal to taxpayers for foreign aid money. Contributors have no way of knowing who will receive their donations or even where they may go, after officials said details had be kept secret for security reasons. USaid's Heather Layman denied it was disappointed with the meagre sum raised after a fortnight. 'Every little helps,' she said. In the past 12 months, Americans raised some $250bn for charity, including other foreign causes such as the Asian tsunami victims. Layman said: 'There is no financial goal. People are looking for a way to help rebuild Iraq and this is a way to facilitate that.' The fundraising comes amid concern that some US projects in Iraq will be scrapped or only partly completed because of rising costs. Some officials fear that money may run out before key projects are completed. Last week, the number of US troops killed in Iraq rose above 1,900.

Last week, the number of US troops killed in Iraq rose above 1,900. Any bets that before this administration is finished that more americans will have been killed due to the botch administration invasion of iraq than is due to terrorist attacks outside iraq on americans in the same period? completely discounting all those innocents killed in iraq? Who's a bigger threat to common people? by our ability to understand RebelAAmerican.Zen[Deist
