Re: "ongoing crankiness"
There are message boards out there where about any manner of communication and demeanor is acceptable. Some like EvC work to maintain civility. Were you ever in a home full of cranky people? I have and it's not pleasant. That's what it would be like if all members were like you every time they got riled.
Imo this action was for your good and the good of all who participate and read.

if more members were like me, this board would be a better place.
Yes and no. You have some admirable qualities which perhaps would be good for some of the rest of us.

Item 10 of the FG:
Keep discussion civil and avoid inflammatory behavior...
Crankiness sometimes tends towards uncivil and inflamitory behavior. King Solomon said something like a soft answer turns away wrath.

My own inclination is to disallow the topic at this site. It's divisive, it's far too consuming for our limited moderator resources, and it's a Coffee House topic.
The problem with sensoring out this national hot topic issue is that it is the demands for unprecedented status and respect favoring a lifestyle having long been deemed devious in our culture which becomes relevant in some social topics.
They emerged out of the closet a few decades ago. Now they want to dominate the parlor.
