Maybe, but the build more ships message is aimed directly at Virginians, some of whom view the prospects of more ships at bases like Norfolk in a very positive light regardless of whether it makes real sense militarily. The few who believe this have no idea what our naval shipbuilding strategy is.
More ships do not necessarily make a better navy. Fully manned, adequately supplied and properly trained ships make a better navy. The problem is we barely have the funding to fully man and supply the ships we currently have. Having 313 ships is useless if we don't have the proper manning and maintenance support for them.
BTW, we are still building ships and we are up to 285 ships from 279 ships during George Bush's administration. Romney's remarks were ridiculous. We are building aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and destroyers as we speak. However, it's not just about numbers, its about efficiency and matching mission needs with required assets and capabilities.
