Author | Topic: The boasts of atheists (Atheist self-deception) | |||||||||||||||||||||||

I am surprised this even made it into the Coffee House!
These boasts--I have run across a lot of them and can provide quotes if you like--just will not do. I'd also like some quotes when you have the time please.
However, it is necessary that we make a distinction. The reason the atheists boast is to show that they can be happy and can be moral without God. Very understandable. As an atheist, I don't even think about God. My morality and my happiness are not the result of my atheism. You would probably be better to sit and ponder over why atheists are much more moral than theists. I mean, we do good deeds because we love our fellow humans and we feel for them, we understand and sympathise a lot of the time with their plights. But, take someone such as a Christian, they only do good deeds because they want a reward of the big guy with the beard when they die.
But we have to realize what is being said here. Yes, one can be happy and one can be moral, but one will also go to one's long home. And what is one's long home? Where is it and can we examine it?
It will be, in a hundred years, as if you never existed. You are of no more significance than a roach crawling across the floor. And what is wrong with this? It is just a fact of life. It is a fact of life than many are scared of, so they have to invent their wee gods to give them hope that there is something else. Pretty sad really.
So one must understand that fact thoroughly before one speaks of "happiness" and "exemplary moral character" and the "wonder of life." What 'fact' are you talking about?
One should say, "We are products of a mindless universe, accidentally produced. We will live out our lives, and have some pleasures, and grow old, and die." Why should we say these things, just because you say so? Why waste away the years depressing yourself about your brief existence, why waste your life away kissing the ass of an imaginary Supreme Being? There is nothing wrong with an atheist being happy and moral, we just don't worry about getting the reward at the end of time. So we grow old and die, shit happens, but at least we have lived. Brian. How about being honest for a change? How about that? What is it in my post that you think is dishonest? Brian.

But I am beng honest when I say those things, what makes you think I am not?
These are not just things that I have made up on the spur of the moment, it has been a long journey that has led to these and other conclusions. How can you imagine that I am being dishonest when I think it is a waste of people's precious time to worship an imaginary being? IMO, to spend 5 minutes worshipping God is a waste of five minutes of your life. Nothing dishonest about it. Brian.

I can't say he'll end up a Christian I sincerely think he already is a Christian who is playing a wee game. Brian.

He's hardly likely to tell you is he?
Who else would take a cheap shot at atheists by setting up false premises, inventing definitions for words as a backtrack, and claiming that all atheists believe a certain thing? But Robin does have all the classic traits of a fundy Christian. Bouts of depression, the craving for a higher authority to take control, the "there must be more to life than this" mentality, misunderstanding other people's faiths, and claiming to know what someone believes better than they do. He is certainly not a nihilist, that much is certain. Brian.

I have that impression also. Now, if he comes on and denies it, then we got him! Brian.

In talking about atheist boasting, that's just about the atheists who boast, not all atheists, but a KIND of boasting that an atheist would do if an atheist boasted And using another definition of boasting than the one the context of his previous posts suggested. But, what he is seeing as boasting is not even anything that crosses an atheists mind, we don't go around thinking that we are happy without God, God is not an issue in our lives, God doesn't exist, it is an non-issue, yet Robin is forcing that on to our thinking.
And I don't see this bit about how he's supposedly claimed to know what others think or believe. Well, when he says that what I suggested is dishonest he is saying that I am essentially thinking what he says I am, when I am not. I do not tell lies, it is one of my pet hates.
All a nihilist is is someone who believes there is no ultimate meaning to life. Most of you all here are nihilists, but you bury it under meanings you invent. Well, Christianity is nihilistic as well, so we are all in the same boat. Brian.

Don't see what you can possibly mean by this. Christianity gives an ultimate meaning to life. The opposite of nihilism. It is just because you have used a very simplistic definition of Nihilism.
Christianity essentially removes meaning from earthly life.

These comments about my secret Christianity are very amusing. But you aren't a secret Christian! Why do you feel the need for a higher power to exist? What do you think is missing in your life? Are you needing a good woman to clear your mind? Sit on uncle Brian's knee and he'll help you. Brian.

There's nothing nihilistic about Christianity concerning this life OR the next. According to Faith, the world famous philosopher. Brian.

You do like to stick those little zingers in there don't you? And I have a very high strike rate!!
It's not that we feel the need for a higher power. Christians are just searching for truth like everyone else. You could have asked me the Truth, it would have saved you a lot of time.
We have just come to a different conclusion that you have. You haven't looked hard enough then.
I could ask; why do you fear a higher power? How can I fear something that doesn't exist? Brian.

Exemplary moral character is more than human, unless you're some kind of saint. This is inaccurate as well. Mother Teresa was often referred to as a living saint, and I think the Vatican has her on one of thse fast tracking to sainthood courses they do. However, Teresa had anything but an exemplary moral character. Brian.

Take a conventional vacation, which consists mostly of looking at things and trying new drinks. How can that be boring? You should come for for a day out with me and my mates when the football season starts up again, you can try some new drinks, and a karaoke! Life is what you make it mate, grab it by the balls. Brian
