I don't know Jar. After looking at the pictures of where Dead Parrot lives, I'm starting to think differently.
I have never been to Texas, but probably will soon for Fire School training (Job related) in College Station.

Re: Welcome to EvC
Being an old, old smoke eater, you need to wander down to Emmitsburg, MD where you can find the first National Fire Academy (now taken over by Homeland Security) and the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. My Dad was one of the main proponents and originators of the creation of the Academy and both he and I used to teach fire fighting through the Extension Service of the U of M.

Re: Welcome to EvC
Jar,
Next time my family and I are in Emmitsburg, MD we will stop by the National Fire Academy. I know that I am very interested in that and my son, who is almost 3, would love it. Thank you for letting me know about it.
Actually, while not a smoke eater, I do R&D on new foam concentrates to help fire fighters do their jobs safer. When testing said foams, I usually get out the Proximity suit and run UL specified tests.
That's pretty cool about the U of M fire school. We do sprinkler testing down at Delaware County Community College, who also has a Fire Safety program, and conduct our Foam/Fire school (1 week only) down in College State, Texas.

Well,
I was raised mainly in two places: Kailua, HI and Austin, TX. For the last two years, I have lived in Ocean Springs, MS, being stationed at Keesler AFB. It's Biloxi's less casino-infested and (IMHO) slightly classier neighbor. Just to the east of all the flashing lights, across a two-mile drawbridge, there I am. The entire area has grown a whole lot in the last decade because of the casinos, and development continues. This is fine by me, as a first-time homeowner, because I will probably have to sell in another year or less. As I've mentioned, I'm thinking hard about splitting from active duty, and if I did then I might stay for a little while. I have, however, a lot of ideas about how to spend my life, and few involve staying here. And if I stay in for a while, I will almost definitely be leaving next spring. Pity, because I am really starting to love the friends I have here. I've made my peace with the climate... 90-100 degrees and high humidity doesn't seem like such a big deal, especially after a summer in Iraq. The cost of living is great (for now), and the ocean is right nearby. Of course, you have to drive two hours east if you want the *clean* ocean, either that or take a half-hour boat ride past the barrier islands. Details. It's a great place. Tends to blow everyone's caricature of Mississippi right out of the water. Just stay within 5 miles of the coast if you visit. Please.

You're almost right. Some of the towns along the MS River are also worth seeing like Vicksburg (my hometown) and Natchez. Both are beautiful small cities with lots of history, vibrant historic downtown districts and fascinating historic homes. Coastal and river cities in Mississippi are not quite so insular and politically reactionary as other regions of this state. Extreme northeast MS is also worth a visit for its breathtaking natural beauty. The stretch of Natchez Trace that runs from Tupelo to Nashville is probably the most beautiful road I've ever driven, save only mountain parkways like the Blue Ridge in the Smokies.
Speaking of roads, the bay bridge you mentioned is part of U.S. Highway 90. The stretch that runs along the beach from Biloxi to Bay St. Louis is one of the nicest city highways I know of.

Re: Well,
Yep, Highway 90. 95% of my daily commute is on it. Beautiful, indeed - especially during those times of the year when the sun rises as I'm flying across that bridge. Unfortunately, it's also one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the country. Summer months provide drivers a plethora of distractions on the beach. The fog is just as bad at other times... my neck is still cracking from getting rear-ended on my way to work in February. All in all, though... I can't complain. I'll be sad to leave.

hurricane damage pictures, etc
i don't have many pictures of where i live. because, frankly, i see my house all the time. however, i DO have some pictures from last august, when the twin hurricans hit us. (click the images for bigger pictures)
here's outside my neighbor's house, about an hour or two prior to frances. the one standing in the middle is my brother.
here's five asplundh employees and one manager standing around in my backyard deciding not to remove all the trees they cut down to restore power, an hour before the hurricane
here's the pile of debris they wanted to leave out in the hurricane until we threw it all in their truck. (that's my house in the background)
here are my crazy drunken neighbors suffering mad cabin fever after the hurricane. we had no electricity for a week. they ran out of tequila in a day.
here are some other people's houses in my neighborhood:
and here's the plaza i worked in until last month or so.
here's some buildings from my school:
and here's the reason anyone's in south florida to begin with, the florida east coast railroad:
