What kind of computer do you have? What you have already described could either be hardware or software problem.
Specifically, when do you get the blue screen and does it say anything on the blue screen? Has the computer been lagging for the last several months? In other words, have you been noticing your computer running slower and slower everyday? Added by edit. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT reformat your harddrive just yet. Tell me the specific things I asked. If need be, I'll walk you through step by step.
Have you tried asking the big guy upstairs? Hehe, just joking Edited by gasby, : No reason given.

Do what Jazzn told you to do. If it comes to it, just reformat it. The reason I didn't want you to reformat immediately is because it could be a pain for someone who's not fluent enough with computers. I do it regularly, but that's just me.
But here is the thing. I suspect very much that after years of usage your harddrive is finally going bad. It is a problem rarely addressed by technicians for some reason. If this is the case, I'm afraid the only thing you can do is save all your vital data on a cd or something before your harddrive crashes completely. Get another harddrive and put it in. The blue screen happens when one more more parts of the computer is no longer recognized by the motherboard. This is usually due to faulty hardware. In laptops, the most common part to cause this kind of error is the cpu, which tends to overheat. But a regular PC shouldn't have this problem unless you shoot a phaser at it. When the ram is bad, the most common way to tell is the computer should consistently not start correctly and may shut down randomly. If your harddrive is giving in, you should experience (1) gradual increasing lag, (2) strange noises like someone is trying to speak with a dead animal in his throat, (3) more lagging, (4) some of your documents may start having jargons where there were coherent words before, (5) random shutdowns, and (6) that blue screen error. So, in all honesty, I really think you have a hardware problem and it is likely to be your harddrive giving into its old age. Do you know how to replace a harddrive? Added by edit. On second thought, if you begin to experience these problems on a regular and consistent basis, start in safe mode. If you continue to have these problems, it's definitely a hardware problem. If it is what I think it is, I don't think it will help you in this case.

That still doesn't sound good. I did the msconfig thing jazz suggested and it did speed things up some. The reason your computer lags when the harddrive is going bad is because the lazer eye is having trouble reading data on the harddrive. Less things to start at startup means less things to read and less procedures to execute. In other words, it could still go either way.
No I don't know how to replace a harddrive...
Ha, you will find that there is nothing to it. Just remember this. If it fits, stick it in. If it doesn't fit, don't try to force it in. Here is a funny story. One time I got a call from somebody that thought he could fix his computer but ended up killing it. I went over to his place and began to examine. It turned out that this guy, in order to make certain things fit, decided to start cutting off some pins. It's like trying to make a AA battery fit in a AAA slot by slicing pieces of it off. Just not a very smart thing to do

Nah. The disk I'm using right now was put in there by my cat
Replacing a disk is painful enough for a novice that I would recommend that someone else do it. It could be that the windows binaries are corrupted on the disk and causing the memory dump.
It may be a difference of opinion, but how likely do you think this is the case here? I've been doing this for years and, although I have heard of people supposedly had this happen to them... I've never had this problem. But to relate this to evolution and abiogenesis, just because the supposed probability is low doesn't mean it can't happen

Full harddrives shouldn't give you that much of a problem.

Sounds like bad harddrive. It also is sounding less and less like memory problem.

She can get an ATA harddrive for less than 30 bucks with free shipping. If she pays for a plane ticket, I'll be happy to fly there and install it for her.

If the cd doesn't work anymore, you can always get openoffice for free. It's essentially the same thing as microsoft word. Just play around with it for a few minutes and you will very quickly find that it's the same as ms office.
I use MS Publisher in my work, not Word, and yes "a bit of Excel" says it there. I've got the CDs for Windows XP and Office XP with Publisher which I assume are still usable though they're as old as the computer. Somebody laid a cassette tape eraser (a magnet basically) down on top of them when helping me move, and I can only hope. I thought hard drives were a lot more expensive than $30 as gasby said, or less than $100 as Jazzns said.
Like everything, you can get something for as cheap as you like or as expensive as you like. A house can cost as little as $50k and as much as $100 million. Jazzns is recommending you to get one of the more expensive ones to get the quality with it. I have a different philosophy on that. In regards to computers, I almost always get the cheapest parts I could find. I've spent years testing everything from the most expensive hardware pieces to the least expensive ones and my experiences tell me unless you're doing something that involves life and death getting the expensive pieces is only a waste of money. Besides, everytime you spend that much money to get the latest, most badass stuff, you will quickly find that by the time you got it home they've already come up with something else newer, better, and more badass than yours. If all you're doing is typing papers for work and going online, you will not notice any difference between a 30 dollar harddrive and a 2 million dollar harddrive. Same thing with memory. The technology nowadays has allowed for mass production of relatively decent memory cards. The only reason you'd want to get the best ram on the market is if you're among computer nerds like myself and would like to show off to his fellow computer nerds how much money he wasted on a damn piece of computer hardware... just like that fellow across the street from my house that spent 500 bucks on a koi. Added by edit. Here is a joke to lighten up the mood. Two IT guys were talking in a bar after work. "Guess what," saysthe first IT guy, "I met this gorgeous blonde in a bar." "What did you do?" says the other IT guy. "Well, I invited her over to my place, we had a couple of drinks,we got into the mood and then she suddenly asked me to take all her clothes off!" "You're kidding me!" says the second IT guy. "Nope." says IT guy one. "I took her miniskirt off, and then Ilifted her up and put her on my desk, next to my new laptop." "Really?" asked the second IT guy. "You got a new laptop?" Edited by gasby, : No reason given.

The processor, otherwise known as the cpu (computer processor unit), is the part of the computer that carries out the instructions. It's the part that adds 2 and 2 to make 4 when you want to make such a calculation on your computer.
The harddrive is only a storage unit. In comparason to your brain... Harddrive = long term memoryRAM = short term memory processor = your personality/consciousness motherboard = hypothalamus electricity = blood with oxygen Stuff like that...

With about 400$, you could get a computer with intel celeron 1 or so GHz with 80 or 100 GB harddrive and 256 MB DDR memory. What's more, with $14.95/month, you could get DSL via AT&T.
The computer itself will, of course, come with a set of speakers and necessary softwares like the drivers for the hardwares and microsoft office. In most cases, however, you will only get office as a tryout version for a limited amount of time. I highly recommend you start using openoffice. And by the way, with DSL, the amount of time it takes for buffering is considerably less. Your choice. On a different note, right click on my computer and select properties. Tell me everything that you see on the first screen there. Added by edit. PS - The computer I am currently using is almost 8 years old. I've spent less than 150 bucks over the years to keep it running. It's still working fine for me, and you'd be surprised to know how much stuff I do with this baby. See, you're already using celeron processor.
Where are you at? If you're in England or some other crazy country, then nevermind with what i'm going to say. Just go to your local best buy... or whatever local store you have that have a large selection of computers. The price range should be around $400 to $2000. The computers on the upper range are the ones that have pentium 4 and all that good stuff. the lower range ones are the ones with celeron processors. These are cheaper because you can't upgrade the ram that much. I think the limit is around 2 Gig or so. But anyway, since the harddrives are so freakin cheap these days, most of them will have like 80 or 100 GB harddrives. They'll come with modem, DVD rewritable, stuff like that. In other words, even if you get the worst baby in the neighborhood, it will still be better than what you have now. A few months ago, a friend of mine needed a new computer to do what you are doing now. She got the cheapest thing they have and it's still working just fine months later. Next week, I will go over to he place to put in more ram so she can do more stuff with it.
