Freespace
One thing I have not seen mentioned is freespace. How much (as a percentage) of your disk is unused?

Re: New Hard Drive
It is the part that avtually does the computing. In your machine is is likely a flat square about 1 1/2" on a side and about 1/8" thick.
Short course.
RAM = the memory actually used during processing. They will look like long cards with smaller rectangualr chips lined up on one or more likely two sides. There will be one or more near identical memory cards and they will be arranged in a bank.
Think of memory as the space on your desk where you work. Various things are taken out, worked on and then put back in storage.
Hard Drive = storage or filing cabinet. This is a rectangular device, about the size nwr posted. It is a shell and inside will be one or more disks that revolve at a moderate speed, usually 7500 RPM or less. This is were you keep all of the things that you are not using right now. When you turn your computer off, it cleans off your desk, the stuff you had in memory, in RAM. But all the stuff on the hard drive is retained, like what is in a filing cabinet.
Processor (AKA CPU) = You. It is what actually does the work. It gets things from the hard drive, moves them onto the desk (RAM), works on them and then puts the finished process away, either back on the hard drive or off to a printer or out onto the internet.
You can see some of these here

Re: The best cheap deal
Before collect too much info on possible purchases, it is probably a good idea to explain to folk what you will be doing with it. For example, you mentioned publisher. That usually indicates graphic design.
If what you are doing is layout or photographic manipulation you will need a different toolbox than if you were doing database and accounting.

Re: The best cheap deal
Some things to consider.
If you are on dial up:
make sure it has a modem. Many computers these days will not have one.
If you use floppy disks:
make sure it has one. Many computers these days will not have floppy drives.

Re: The best cheap deal
You can find dual core from about $500.00 on up.
Acer S285
NOTE:
the machine in the link does NOT have a floppy or a modem.

Probably see quad cores by Christmas
You might want to wait about 90 days for two reasons. Intel should be shipping Quad Core procs by then and you will have the choice of going that direction or may see the prices on dual cores drop.

Re: Lo-tech nightmare strikes again
What is the model of your printer?
Is the new computer connected to the internet when you are trying to install the software?
What is the name of the application that will not uninstall?

on general security
But the point is I don't go to sites that seem risky.
The way the bad guys succeed is by looking innocent. In addition, like a good pathogen, these days they try to do minimal damage to the host system.
The bad guys are no longer kids working out of a garage. Today it is businesses, and even governments that see the proliferation of personal computers on the net as an exploitable resource. The viruses, trojans, backdoors and root kits are increasingly sophisticated and specific.
It is a good idea of every computer owner to spend a little time getting to understand things like ports and how computers communicate with each other. Today we have tools available that let the user control and protect their computer better than ever before. The biggest hurdle is that many folk think it is far more complex than it really is.
