It's an interesting idea, but I caution you not to fall into the mental trap of assuming that, just because a communication medium is more like having a face-to-face conversation in real life, that medium is somehow
better.
I find that EvC has several advantages that make it a very compelling experience for me:
1) It's restricted. The forum rules, and simply the fact that the forum is dedicated to one (albiet vast) issue, means that we don't sit around and talk about the weather. The forum itself presents an issue to stimulate discussion.
2) It's a content-rich channel. Face to face, I can only talk about one thing at a time, and everybody's remarks have to be brief lest they monopolize the conversation. In this medium many, many multiple conversations can occur at once, and remarks can be as long as they have to in order to communicate points.
3) It's redactible within a certain amount of time. Occasionally I realize I should have added something right when I hit "Submit." I have the opportunity to go back and add that without forcing a change in the conversation (as I might have to do face to face.)
The people who take advantage of the EvC chat interface might very well be the people who take advantage of your Second Life space. The reasons that I don't see myself at EvC Second Life very much are probably the same reasons I don't spend much time in the chat system here. I dunno, am I missing something, maybe? Anyway I get enough chatty kinds of communication in my World of Warcraft guild.
