Re: Hi Perc
I registered and played for about 30 minutes last night and was INCREDIBLY BORED, but was still incredibly intrigued by the concept - a virtual world where anything is possible.
From what I've seen, it seems like Second Life proves that if you put thousands of anonymous people together and tell them they can do anything, most of the time they'll just want to have sex with each other.

Re: Hi Perc
One wonders what's keeping the members of this board from succumbing.
To what?

Re: After more research...
It's an interesting idea, but I caution you not to fall into the mental trap of assuming that, just because a communication medium is more like having a face-to-face conversation in real life, that medium is somehow better.
I find that EvC has several advantages that make it a very compelling experience for me:
1) It's restricted. The forum rules, and simply the fact that the forum is dedicated to one (albiet vast) issue, means that we don't sit around and talk about the weather. The forum itself presents an issue to stimulate discussion.
2) It's a content-rich channel. Face to face, I can only talk about one thing at a time, and everybody's remarks have to be brief lest they monopolize the conversation. In this medium many, many multiple conversations can occur at once, and remarks can be as long as they have to in order to communicate points.
3) It's redactible within a certain amount of time. Occasionally I realize I should have added something right when I hit "Submit." I have the opportunity to go back and add that without forcing a change in the conversation (as I might have to do face to face.)
The people who take advantage of the EvC chat interface might very well be the people who take advantage of your Second Life space. The reasons that I don't see myself at EvC Second Life very much are probably the same reasons I don't spend much time in the chat system here. I dunno, am I missing something, maybe? Anyway I get enough chatty kinds of communication in my World of Warcraft guild.

Re: After more research...
Avatar sex sounds a bit out there!
Actually, no. It's about as erotic as making a circle with the fingers of one hand, inserting your extended index finger into the circle, and moving back and forth.
That is, it's a representation of sex, but it's not a particularly sexual experience.

Re: More Adventures in Second Life
Yes, it seemed to totally fritz my graphics card temporarily.
Probably crashed your graphics drivers. A quick restart usually solves the problem, but make sure you have the most up-to-date graphics drivers available for your chipset. Unless you have some weirdo card, you'll get those drivers from either ati.com or nvidia.com.

Speaking of woman suits
Just a plug into your midbrain or something.
It puts the plug into its midbrain or else it gets the hose again!

Re: someone stole my idea?
Would that be feasible with the cranial nerves as well, such as the optic nerve?
Skip the optic nerve and just write directly to the visual cortex. That's what the existing systems do.

Re: someone stole my idea?
That's certainly the best way if you are doing vision only, but if you want the rest of the sensations of smell, sound, taste etc, then it would be easier to plug into the area of the midbrain where all the cranial nerves are found in one spot, rather than across the entire brain (postfrontal gyrus for touch, temporal lobe for hearing etc)
Yeah, but it's not just a transmission issue; it's an issue of transmitting the right signals. Translation. As it is, we know a lot more about how sensations are mapped to the proper areas of the brain than we do about how sensations are encoded and transmitted along nerve fibers.
Plus it's not clear how to "tap" into nerve bundles without severing them and rendering the subject paralyzed, but it's easy enough to drop an array of microelectrodes across the cerebrum to stimulate the proper regions.
