I thought the standard creationist idea was that horses and donkeys can interbreed because they're the same "kind". Wouldn't a chimp/human hybrid imply that we too are the same "kind"?

You must supply these answer to your question since it appears you support the creationist side. It is up to you to back up the claim that you support.
The answers from genesis folk actually agree with you but they point out that the Y chromosome is inherited through the male so it can be used in the same way to look for Adam.
However it is unlikely these good folk will accept that the male Y chromosome is the likely result of degradation of a female X chromosome.
