per se, my mother had a Close Encounter of the Weird Kind with bureaucracy.
All of her life she was called Katie by friends and family but she assumed that Catherine was her legal name. However, when the time came to apply for pension benefits, she was informed that she didn't exist. It turned out that she had been regisered at birth as Katie, so Katie was eligible for pension benefits, but every other government document listed her as Catherine, who had never been born. In the end, the dilemna was solved by legally changing her name to one or the other (I forget which), to synchronise the red tape.
