The Rosetta probe is due to reach Comet 67P on 6th August.
Comet 67P is thought to contain water and maybe amino acids. If the probe (and its companion probe, Philae, which will be anchored on the meteor) detects the same ratio of hydrogen and deuterium isotopes as in our oceans it will be pretty solid evidence that it was such meteors that delivered water to our arrid planet after it cooled.
Both probes will also scan the comet's gasses looking for amino acids - the 'building blocks of life.'
Can't wait.....

One week away
WOW! We’re really getting to the good stuff now! This is no computer-generated shape model, this is the real deal: the double-lobed nucleus of Comet 67P/C-G, as imaged by Rosetta’s OSIRIS (Optical, Spectroscopic, and Infrared Remote Imaging System) narrow-angle camera on Tuesday, July 29. At the time just about a week away from making its arrival, ESA’s spacecraft was 1,950 km (1,211 miles) from the comet when this image was taken. (That’s about the distance between Providence, Rhode Island and Miami, Florida that’s one fancy zoom lens, Rosetta!)

Well Rosetta has arrived and is in orbit around the meteor
The lander doesn't deploy until November...pfnnrr

The decision has just been taken to launch the probe - seperation in 30 minutes, 7 hours to landing.
They're talking it down a bit, the chances of it landing in a suitable place are only about 70% apparently. It would be a great shame if it touched down, landed on a rock and tipped over. Travelled hundreds of millions of miles, then falls over in the last few inches.

She's down! They have telemetry. Lander is sitting on the rocks and talking to them - everyone looks slightly shocked and manically happy.
Science works :-)

The poor thing is in the dark on the edge of a cliff. Only getting 90 minutes sun every 12 hours - batteries won't last long apparently.

Rats
Scientists have dealt a blow to the theory that most water on Earth came from comets.
Results from Europe's Rosetta mission, which made history by landing on Comet 67P in November, shows the water on the icy mass is unlike that on our planet.
The results are published in the journal Science.
The authors conclude it is more likely that the water came from asteroids, but other scientists say more data is needed before comets can be ruled out.

They're going to attempt to wake up Philae tomorrow. The comet is closer to the sun and may now be warm enough to communicate.
It might take a few days before we know for sure.
