So why did you respond if you knew the joke was over?
Will you respond to this even though you know the joke is over? ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

The unit in question ("Regulars, by God!") could be any battalion descending from the elements of Winfield Scott's brigade at the Battle of Chippawa (5 July 1814), where it had been said - perhaps not accurately - that the enemy commander, British Brigadier General Phineas Riall, having mistaken the force for a detachment of militia owing to their grey uniform jackets, was surprised by the brigade's advance in a frontal assault that resulted in the British being defeated and forced to withdraw.
Finding that he was under attack by troops other than the contemptible and easily broken militia he expected to quickly repulse, Brigadier Riall was reputed to have exclaimed in chagrin: "Those are regulars, by God!" as Scott's brigade closed ranks and came in with the bayonet. The title antedates the Mexican-American War. One of the regiments descending from a unit in Scott's brigade is the 22nd Infantry, which was a part of the 4th Infantry Division through World War II. One of the 4th ID (Mechanized) battalions presently serving in Iraq is the 1st of the 22nd Infantry, and is therefore entitled to be called "Regulars, by God!" ------------------Richard Bartucci, D.O. I am a very out-spoken, 68 year old Agnostic Atheist who has not believed this god crap for at leat 55 years if not longer.
I raise hell any goverment function or place where prayers are said, write letters to the editor about the total stupidity of religion and havebeen a member ov various Athiest groups. I am also an ex-paratrooper who served in the 101st Airborne Div.(plus more than 6 years of active reserve.) There are very few, it any, people, who dislike religion more than I do. Anyone who think that only because a military unit has a moto taken from military history means the members of that unit are any more, or any less, religious than any other unit IS AN IDIOT! And to think this somehow proves OUR CORRECT actions in Iraq is some type of religious crusade, is the height of stupidity! Neil C. Reinhardt ------------------NoniNeil

Look,
What do you think I am, some kind of mind reader? How am I to know something is "supposed" to be a joke? All kinds of idiots are on the net and they say all kinds of really stupid things. And if you think I am going to read every reply to something which posted, guess again.

quote: Hey moron, read the link. I understand that the motto came from something that was not a religious reference. The unit's commander has taken it further and the article explicitly makes that point. The fact that this has already come up as an issue and been dealt with in this thread makes your post extra ridiculous. Perhaps instead of speaking out so much, you should shut your yap and read slow enough to understand what is being said before replying.
quote: There are many religious nuts that view Iraq (and our general war on terror) as a crusade. These include the very religious leaders who Bush interacts with regularly. If you do not understand that then you aren't getting out too much. In particular case I was addressing it was a unit commander that was treating his troop's activity in Iraq as part of a religious crusade, and higher ups were not putting a stop to it. If you want to argue that the Iraq War was a great idea, start a thread on it. But even if you take that position, I cannot believe you'd agree with the unit commander's actions in the linked article. Read the article Neil, and then come back and give your opinion. ------------------holmes

Look,
Since I am retired and spend my time in seach of knowledge rather than having to work or go to school, the odds are VERY. VERY high that I know one hell of a lot more what is going on in the world than you. So do not be a total jerk and tell me to get out more. Next, you should have said you were referring to a speech given be some officer and not just to the units motto. (Again showing you think others are mind readers.) I replied to WHAT YOU SAID! And my reply stands!

NoniNeil responds to me:
quote: Since you weren't here for the original interchange, I expect you to maintain at least a semblance of relevance to the discussion. That said, I do think that you are capable of reading English as a native speaker and thus are capable of detecting turns of phrase that indicate that a statement is sarcastic or symbolic or any of the other ways in which a statement is tagged by context to be taken some way other than literally.
quote: By reading for context. Or is English a second language for you? Every language has their ways of indicating that a statement is not to be taken literally. If you are unfamiliar with the language, then you may not be aware of the specific ways in which the language does it but if you are a native speaker, then we would expect you to be able to recognize context.
quote: So you're saying that you're refusing to keep up-to-date about a thread of conversation and you still expect us to believe that you will then be capable of making an intelligent comment about it? Yes, I think that if you wish to be taken seriously, you will read every reply to something which was posted. How can you possibly give any sort of informed statement if you don't know what has been said previously? ------------------Rrhain WWJD? JWRTFM!

quote: You did not reply to what I said. If you notice it was not just about a motto, there was this word I used that linked it to the rest of the sentence which was even more important. The word was "and". Amazingly it seems you still haven't finished the sentence or read the link. This was not about a speech some officer made. It is about the ACTIONS of driving his men into hazardous situations and asking to be shot at because he believes God is protecting his unit... oh yeah and by the way that is why he applied the greater meaning to that unit's motto. Why don't you not be a total jerk and read everything through slowly, perhaps twice, before responding. There was no expectation on my part that anyone be a mind reader. That's why I provided a link. And on your retirement giving you more free time than me... exactly how old am I and what do I do for a living? How much free time do I get to spend on researching topics? Yeah, research that... jerk. (Note: If you'd like me to lay off the rough wording in my replies, cut me some slack and treat me nice. Not sure why you came at me in two different threads with guns blazing.) ------------------holmes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------I read the news today, oh boy. One of our US units is named "regulars by God" and go out asking to be shot at because they believe they are protected by God? Is this for real? Please tell me this is not for real... ----------------------------------------------------------------------Joseph Kony's Spirit War by Richard Petraitis The year 2001 saw no cessation in the magic wars fought on the African Continent. The Twenty-First Century's arrival witnessed yet another tribal revolt, fueled by magical belief, raging in Nigeria's Oil Delta. In the Delta, members of the Egbesu Cult, (the war god of the Ijaw People), battled the Nigerian Army, with rebel fighters believing they had immunity to bullets.[1] The war god's priests convinced Ijaw teenagers that all bullets fired at them would turn around in mid air and return to their origin--hapless government soldiers! [2] Not surprisingly, hundreds of Ijaw men were soon killed by the military. However, despite the serious casualties inflicted on the Ijaw fighters by the army, Nigeria's oil delta region still remains a bastion of magical thinking and the Egbesu Cult shows no signs of vanishing so. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Peace and good fortune to forum members and their loved ones. I had a funny thought. You think if that commander in the article had been worshipping Egbesu instead of Yahweh he'd have gotten the boot?
I'll bet a lot of people that say "right on" to a guy thinking Yahweh is stopping bullets, would be snickering at the idiot for thinking Egbesu was. ------------------holmes
