Just a moment... This is pretty awsome! We can now display images on a special paper as if it were a computer screen.

not adequate as "paper" yet
This is a long way from adequate as "paper". If one takes the perspective of a user of computer monitors it appears fine only because monitors are so horribly, awfully, poor. Note that your inkjet printer has 3 or more times the resolution of this stuff. It has to get to 300 or better (600 for good quality) dpi before you have a comptitor to paper and printing. ABE: note that I'm viewing this at 1280x1024 on a 19" LCD monitor. To be paper quality the resolution would have to be more like 4000 x 3000. We are a long way from "good enough". Not exactly what we're looking for, for the "In the News" topic. This forum are for news items related to the EvC debate. Just a clarification as to why I'm about to move this to the Coffee House forum. This message has been edited by AdminBen, Wednesday, 2005/10/19 08:42 AM

Research and development work on electronic paper technology has been proceeding for well over a decade now (there are several different technological approaches), and periodically one company or another makes an announcement that causes articles touting it's impending widespread use in actual products, but I've gotten to the point where I ignore all the hoopla. It looks like it's to the point where it can serve in niche applications like cellphones, but I think the days of newspapers and books distributed via electronic paper are as far off as ever. Problems range from refresh rate to costs to volume manufacturing issues. I'm not usually a technology skeptic, but this product category has gotten hyped at least once a year for a long time now. As far as electronic paper is concerned, I'm from Missouri. By the way, the article states that electronic paper is "a fancy term for a flexible LCD panel", which is incorrect as far as i know. As the article itself makes clear in the explanation that follows, there is no liquid crystal technology in this version of electronic paper. I don't believe any company's electronic paper solution is based upon LC technology. --Percy

It won't be LCD
We will but it won't be LCD. Digital "paper" to my mind MUST have the feature of permanence. It must not require power to maintain it's state.

Re: It won't be LCD
oh sorry i meant led. i'm losing my mind. but not it won't be paper... more of a piant on, power up thing. but you know. the idea of it being paper is foolish but i think it's a practical term for flexibility and transportability.

reinterpetted from a movie:
quote: Thought for the day. During the space race back in the 1960's, NASA was faced with a major problem. The astronaut needed a pen that would write in the vacuum of space. NASA went to work. At a cost of $1.5 million they developed the "Astronaut Pen". Some of you may remember. It enjoyed minor success on the commercial market. The Russians were faced with the same dilemma. They used a pencil.
it's really too bad it's not true. (why must you hurt me so, snopes?) but it's a perfectly good point. אָרַח

it's really too bad it's not true. Yeah, I imagine the Russian solution to writing in space probably killed three people amid a massive government coverup.

apparently that's what's wrong with pencils. broken led, at the speed of orbit, can be quite dangerous.
