MINE!
All this time and it seems that I never realised that I share it with Charles Darwin! Tomorrow is Darwin Day and as part of the celebrations, two scientists are performing "the origin of the Species" as a reggie style tune. Anything happening for Darwin day where you live? (Admins: I thought coffee shop was the best place for this?)

Happy Birthday, CK. I'll hoist a tall one (or more) in your honor. How are you planning to celebrate?

Charles:
First off, Happy Birthday. Back when I was a grad student, we started (actually I guess we restarted) a tradition of hosting a Darwin Birthday Celebration (and of coursebeing good Americans, we also have a toast to Abraham Lincoln as well). It is usually held at a Profs house and includes various activities...such as the "Best Darwin Reading" from any of his books, and a variety of "fitness games" in which each sex competes for points to see who is the most fit female and who is the most fit male. We've done things like optimal foraging by trying to flip over objects using only your nose in a limited amount of timethe more difficult to flipthe more points, thumb wrestling for dominance, trying to draw some aspect of Darwin’s life while your team tried to guess what is was, and some sort of trivia game (similar to jeopardy), plus many, many more I am forgetting. Of course, these games sound easy until you factor in the beverage consumption and then things have been known to get a bit wild to say the least. And we also have a chili cook-off, with the grad students being the judges while faculty and staff do the cooking (my wife is the defending three time undefeated champion of this relatively new event). Prizes are also awarded. Finally we all sing Happy Birthday, get some cake, sit down and watch the classic Ren and Stimpy episode about the Galapagos Islands (if you’ve never seen ityou are really missing out). All-in-all it is a very good time. Unfortunately, this year there will be no party because the usual host is on sabbatical and no one else wanted to pick up the ball and run with it. However, I suspect that next year it will be on again.

You should have popped in last year about this time, Charles, I had started a Darwin's birthday thread back then.

In honor of Darwin and CK I will test out the Buffalo Theory tonight.
Buffalo Theory: "One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

You are a lucky man to share your birthday with Charles(!) Darwin. I share mine with Larry Flint and Shere Hite, can you imagine?

And more over I am originally from just outside his place of birth (Shrewsbury - I'm about 5 miles away). The main shopping centre in the town is called "the Charles Darwin".

If Shrewsbury were in the USA, they'd probably be selling Fossilized Darwin Bones and Chocolate Barnacles, what do you think?

I share it with Charles Darwin! You are amazingly well preserved then. Heck I'm about a third of your age and look how much younger you look. Congratulations indeed!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR CHARLES! (You and Darwin of course)

Happy Birthday, Charles! You are definitely evolving into quite a good online buddy. How old will you be again?
You appear to be about 30, but I could be off by anywhere from 6000 years to several hundred million! This message has been edited by Phatboy, 02-13-2005 04:44 AM
