I thought this site was quite good in a gentle (with an underlying serious point) take on ID and "alternative" creation theories.
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
Anyway Scientists support it, so it must be true!
quote:
"As a research scientist, I am strongly in favor of the simplest explanations inferred from empirical data. It's quite clear to me that the evidence for the Flying Spaghetti Monster's creation of the Universe is as good as that for Intelligent Design, as accepted by the Kansas school board. I therefore wholeheartedly support your letter, in that FSMism should get equal treatment under the auspices of the state government."
-- Brock M. Tice
quote:
"In discussing competing theories, if one is to present ID then it is only fair and logical to teach other theories with commensurate evidence. Based on Mr. Henderson's letter, it is clear that the FSM theory has evidence comparable in weight to ID. As a scientist and professor, it is often difficult to present differing opinions in an unbiased way. However, it is important to the student to be exposed to these ideas to form their own opinions. This comes right out of the handbook of the ID purporters: present the different "theories" and let the listener decide. If those in favor of ID are so convinced, then they should not be concerned that the presentation of the FSM theory would serve to undermine the credibility of ID. "
-- Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, PhD
quote:
"As a scientist I believe that when presented with a new idea every possibility should be considered so we can eventually find the truth. It would be very biased if the only possibilities presented would be regulated by some authority. As a scientist I am biased towards the theory of evolution, but this does not mean that everyone should be forced to only learn this and believe this. Putting this aside, I feel if the government feels the need to regulate what students need to learn, then all ideas should be taught in school. Not only Intelligent Design (ID) should be taught, but the theory of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) should also be taught. In my scientific opinion when comparing the two theories, FSM theory seems to be more valid then the classic ID theory. There is more data to back FSM then I have ever seen for ID. The graph which was presented should alone more convincing then anything ID has ever presented. I endorse the FSM theory."

i love the replies from the kansas school board. it seems the majority didn't get it. that's irony at it's best.

I like this quote:
quote:
"Letting the religious right teach ID in schools is like letting the Marines teach poetry in advanced combat training. As a scientist, I see these the relevancy between the two sets to be equal. If Kansas is going to mess up like this, the least it can do is not be hypocritical and allow equal time for other alternative "theories" like FSMism, which is by far the tastier choice."

It took a day before I could access it (not sure why), but it seems a very worthy entree, I mean entry, into science education.
I was particularly struck by the amount of detailed research which has come out in such a short period of time since FSM theory's public announcement. Especially the correlations to brain morphology, and string (noodle) theory.
My guess is further research in this area will only prove still more fruitful. For example its immediately applicable to investigations into dark matter, which addresses the issue of mass which we cannot currently detect, but must be there. Well anyone who has eaten a full plate of pasta is familiar with the idea of something being heavier than how it actually looks.
Indeed expansion of the universe could very well be tied to expanding waistlines. And has anyone attempted to detect the flavor of so called "red shifts"? More like drips of "red sauce".
I truly hope some journalist can get to Bush and ask if he would be for teaching FSM theory in conjunction with ID, in as straight a face as possible. Please Flying Spaghetti Monster, make it so!

I should have posted it yesterday but ran out of time. This Flying Spaghetti Monster website goes way beyond mere humor. He got a response from 3 members of the Kansas Board of Education who struggled and lost against the conservative majority.
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster
The site includes the idea, a forum, and the Kansas State emails.
It is truly a funny site and a clever idea. He is thinking of suing the Kansas Board of Education to have FSM included in the science class along side ID

i don't.
there's nothing wrong with poetry, and to assign it the same status as id is just plain insulting to the talented poets of the world.

It'sa direct connect to the anti-matter diet as well.
Just as matter and anti-matter colide yielding pure energy, the FSM diet is the quickest way to lose weight and become more energetic.
One plate of pasta and one plate of anti-pasta yeild 0 calories and pure energy.

Re: It'sa direct connect to the anti-matter diet as well.
yes, but only if you very precisely measure the amounts, otherwise you get an uncontrollable gaseous reaction.

a better analogy ...
Letting the religious right teach ID in schools is like ...
letting someone who can't add check your long division.

Where's the IPU crowd? They should get equal billing too.

Thor's spiritual awakening
Well, I am a convert. I think I'll devote my life from here on to spreading the wisdom of the great FSM.
Yes, that's right. I'm going to become a Pasta Pastor.

On the 7th day, God was arrested.
