Here's a success story from the abstinence-only sex ed crowd, from Adult Web Hosting :
quote:
Childless couple told to try sex
A German couple who went to a fertility clinic after eight years of marriage have found out why they are still childless - they weren't having sex.
The University Clinic of Lubek said they had never heard of a case like it after examining the couple who went to see them last month for fertility tests.
Doctors subjected them to a series of examinations and found they were both apparently fertile, and should have had no trouble conceiving.
A clinic spokesman said: "When we asked them how often they had had sex, they looked blank, and said: "What do you mean?".
"We are not talking retarded people here, but a couple who were brought up in a religious environment who were simply unaware, after eight years of marriage, of the physical requirements necessary to procreate."
The 30-year-old wife and her 36-year-old husband are now being given sex therapy lessons while the university clinic undertakes a study to try to find out if there are more couples with a similar lack of sex education.
Abstinence-only education may work for farm kids, who have the example of nature to eventually follow, but it's simply bad education to expect someone to develop good sexual habits if "don't have sex" is the only message they ever recieve on the subject.

The abstinence argument is silly.

When I saw that I could only wonder if they understood why they were abstaining in the first place.

Virgin Soldiers
I just read an interesting article by George Monbiot. He cited some statistics on the "non"-success of abstinence teaching. It is interesting to note that those countries which teach teenagers about sex and contraceptives have a lower teenage birth-rate than the U.S., which has a worse record than India. Obviously teaching teen-agers about sex and giving them options for contraceptives and other support reduces the rate of teenage pregnancies.
More telling is that Bush has instructed the CDC to stop gathering data on teenage pregnacies and
He also forced them to drop their project identifying the sex education programmes which work, after they found that none of the successful ones were "abstinence-only".
The point made is that if you are ignorant about sex you are more likely to make mistakes that open you to STD's and unwanted pregnancies.
From George Monbiot
The article is Titled: "Waging War with the Virgin Soldiers."

Better live it up now, I'm sure it's all over for us when he gets back
Interesting web page there. I went and read a couple of articles. How can people be so closed-minded and stupid?

Re: Virgin Soldiers
As I was heading to work the other day, the local PBS radio station was playing, if I recall correctly, The California Report.
It seems that California has reduced its teen birth rate by 40% over the last decade (1991 to 2002).
The national rate fell 30% in the same time period.
Note that this was during the horrendous "Clinton years" when the country was supposedly going to hell in a handbasket with regard to morals due to Clinton's sexual activities.
California is the only state in the nation that refuses federal funds for sex-education as it requires abstinence-only teaching.
Instead, California has comprehensive sex-education, originated by Pete Wilson and tremendously expanded by Gray Davis.
While the state spent $200 million on its sex education, it saved $3 billion in taxpayer and community money as a result of not having to spend as much on the social services teen mothers would need.
Since then, California has shifted to an abstinence-emphasized program of sex-education that teaches that requires parental approval in order to teach children about contraception and other methods to prevent disease.

Onward Virgin Soldiers
You've inspired me, Rrhain!
-------------------------------
Onward Virgin Soldiers
(sung to the tune of 'Onward Christian Soldiers')
Onward virgin soldiers, off to class you go,
Where you'll learn of evil things you must forgo.
You'll be taught of abstinence,
You'll be taught what's good.
Never will you hear of condoms
Nor Planned Parenthood.
At each sign of weakness, you must just say no
You must never falter, else to hell you'll go.
Never think of hormones
Never think of sex
Never anything that Satan
Puts into your head.
Onward then you children, God will be so proud
That you never ever talk of sex out loud.
Thus you'll not be tempted
To do things not good
You can say "hey I'm okay
With Jesus have I stood".
Onward virgin soldiers, to the culture wars
Marching ever stronger, than you were before.
Now that you've got Jesus
You'll be brave and pure.
Never will you mention sex
Unless it's to abjure.
Christ will guide our army, He will smite the gays
And He'll make all pregnant, unwed girls to pay
They refused to listen
To His word so pure
Off to hell, where Satan dwells
He'll send them all for sure.
Amen.
